@wmarcio you'll have to manually clone and build https://github.com/libretro/fbalpha2018

it's up to you to either not update fbalpha or keep your romset up-to-date

Next time, follow the instructions and don't update, it'll save you a lot of trouble if you don't want to bother updating your romsets.

      Hi, thanks for answering.

Would it be too much to ask, or could you teach me this procedure?
I do not know anything about linux ...
      thank you very much.

@wmarcio I would recommend to stick with the latest version and fix your romsets instead (using the dat file i provide at https://github.com/libretro/fbalpha/blob/master/dats/FB Alpha v0.2.97.44 (ClrMame Pro XML).dat and a tutorial about clrmamepro), doing otherwise would be a lot more complex and there are most likely specific steps for retropie which i'm unaware of.

Btw, i'll mention it since it has been a request for a long time, midway W unit games (mortal kombat 3, rampage world tour, ...) are now available in fbalpha, and midway T unit (mortal kombat 1 & 2, ...) should be available in the next few days. Can't tell you how well they perform on rpi3 (my sd card died a few weeks ago and i didn't find the time to reinstall something on a new sd card), but on my x86 computers they work perfectly. Support for a lot of 80s american cabinet from atari and williams was also added some time ago.

mk1 & 2 are now supported in public releases, they run fine on my rpi3, mk3 seems to be a bit too much for my rpi3 atm.
On a sidenote, don't use frameskipping with midway games atm, it's causing unexpected rendering issues, currently trying to figure out what's causing this.

@UDb23 Don't ask for an ETA, things will be ready when they'll be ready, and most people are busy in december. I don't think there will be an official release as long as the midway drivers aren't perfect (or almost), and i think there is still quite some work to do on them.

                  Hi
The current FB Alpha libretro that we get from binary source in retropie-setup 4.4 (updated) is this new pre-v0.2.97.44? I am asking because according to the changelog some new games have been added, like Mortal Kombat. I have a verified rom set (verified against 0.2.97.44 dat file) but it won't load at all

I have no idea what the pre-packaged version from retropie-setup is, however i would recommend building from sources and picking the dat from https://github.com/libretro/fbalpha/blob/master/dats/FB Alpha (ClrMame Pro XML%2C Arcade only).dat at the same time, so that you can be sure to have a romset matching your fbalpha version (as stated above, there are changes every few day/week).

On a sidenote, the midway mk/kinst drivers still need a lot of polishing in fbalpha, and considering one of the cpu interpreter needs a major rewrite, it might take a long time before it's at the level of other fbalpha drivers, you'll clearly have better emulation with mame2003-plus for those games.

@BuZz You might be interested in updating your build script, there are specific instructions to build the dynarec which allows to play killer instinct at full speed on x86_64, see bottom of https://github.com/libretro/fbalpha

                              Hello,

Just trying to understand this thread. I just installed Stretch on 3B+ fresh, and that comes with FBAlpha. Is that the "best" core of choice these days or should I be looking for FBAlpha2018? Looking for max compatibility and performance as usual.

                                @GreenHawk84 I'd also check Mame2003plus.
In any case you need to update from source to get the latest version.

@UDb23 That was my next question. So the cores that come with the fresh Retropie 4.4 are not the latest? Aren't my cores updated when I use the Retropie Setup script to "Update all packages"?

I want to get on the right track for having the latest and greatest versions on my setup.

@GreenHawk84 Fresh install+update all packages you'll only get latest final (non beta) versions (same as update from binary afaik).
Mame2003plus and FBA's latest versions, by updating from source, provide a lot of new features and new games support. Both are being updated quite often.

It's already on the Pi, as lr-fbalpha. It will be renamed as lr-fbneo shortly, but otherwise the code is just a continuation of the fbalpha project. There are more details in the libretro.com forum post, which outlines the reasons for the name change.
