I am new to this. I was wondering after my joystick and buttons are ready to be used, do I set up the joystick under the d-pad or the left analog stick or right analog stick?

@dankcushions, I have an 8 way joystick. When you set up left and up if you go that up and left direction does it just work cause it knows that your that way? If that makes sense

@drevil2002 Did you already setup Retropie or are you asking in advance?

As described in Controller Configuration, RP should configure your controller(s) at the first boot, or later through its Main Menu.

As for 8-way controllers (i.e. most of them), RP will ask you for the four horizontal and vertical directions, the four "corner" directions will just be their combination.

One important hint: If you wired up some arcade sticks yourself, be sure that the wiring between the directional microswitches and the usb encoder (the most common way for home builds) are exactly the same for every controller of the same brand, because RP saves their configuration by the controller's or encoder's name, i.e. one config file for all identical controllers.

All you have to do is set up down left right a 8 way and a 4 way joystick both have 4 switches. The only difference in a 4way is it physically prevents you doing diagonals like up/left.

Arcade big joystick or small controller joystick. If you have a big one then dpad. If you have a little one then right stick/left stick.
