@adambegood Figured out the C Issue. For this game, set your Joypad D-Pad to Mouse/Keyboard/Joypad Mapping to Arrow 3Button. Edit : Or is it Keypad 3-button? One of those two work.
Can I just say how much I adore the graphics on this system? That extra resolution is just gorgeous (same for the PC88 to a lesser extent).
Keypad 3-button! Perfect. Really gutted I didn't get there myself though. Great work.
I think it is a good looking machine, hopefully I can make some progress in Night Slave and Rusty now. :)

Nice to hear it works. Happy playing !

@folly I've just caught up on all this translation stuff! Would be amazing if it could be done.
I use patches or if it is a one-off like an instruction to change disks that I don't understand, I point a Google Translate camera at the screen. Very unsophisticated system over here!
-
@adambegood Excellent, glad you could get it to work! Today's been pretty productive, between Night Slave and getting the FM7 to run decently. Sadly I have to say my attempts to run X1 games in Mess have failed miserably but I'm going to try again tomorrow.
@Folly I take it the red text is the overlay?

Actually, I was thinking that you did it that way.
I don't know how the results will be. But it's worth a shot. Don't you think so ?

Yep.

@folly Seems like it works, in theory. As most games require you to press a button to get new text, would it be possible to cut down the performance issues by mapping the script to a hotkey combination? Thay way you're only ever processing one frame at a time.

Exactly. and the hotkey is already there "F8" for making screenshots.
-
@folly That's brilliant, then I can't imagine why it wouldn't work.

Well, have to go now. Will see how it goes.
-
@folly Do let us know. I'll do a post tomorrow about my X1 troubles.

I absolutely think so, imagine being able to play all Japanese games. It would be amazing.

@adambegood Absolutely. But the other thing to consider is the quality of automatic translations...but when I consider how bad some English localizations were back in the day (Breath of fire.... arrrrrgh) I can't complain ^^
I can't wait to see how this will turn out.

Yeah I agree. I did think the same but then the quality should get better as time goes on, and having it as an option is still a great thing.
Zero Wing on Megadrive! I watched that intro the other day on my Pi.
-
@adambegood Oh man now that's a hilariously horrid localisation. 'All your base are belong to us' ^^

@zering Got to the first boss on Night Slave. Died.
Played some Chitty Chitty Train, quite fun.
Trying to play Rusty again now, died at the first boss here yesterday also. I think I may not be very good at games.
Edit: got to second level in Rusty! And you can save.
-
@adambegood Don't worry, Rusty is notoriously hard.
I generally suck at games (except Rpgs). I can't get past the first boss in Super Castlevania IV, I've never finished a Mario game and I scream with frustration by the time I hit the second World of Super Mario World or Donkey Kong Country. It doesn't stop me enjoying the games though. -

@adambegood I got as far as Stage 3 in Rondo of Blood then it started pissing me off. You can save between stages thankfully.
For what it's worth I think it's excellent but I also think that Konami in the early to mid nineties had a certain tendency to sometimes disregard playability in favor of difficulty. Most of their games end up pissing me off in ways that other difficult games do not.
That said I did finish Gradius 1 and 2, albeit with save states. On a good day I can play 3 to 4 stages in either before dying. I've made it to the maximum speed stage of Gradius 2 without dying once, but that stage is a death sentence.
