Certain menus not displaying correctly.

I installed RetroPie on the newest Raspbian Buster on Pi Zero, tried reinstalling Raspbian and RetroPie again, same result. Whay might be causing this? I will try reinstalling everything again individually from the manage packages menu but if someone knows the issue please help.

Doesnt happen when installing RetroPie as an OS.

You have not allocated enough VRAM to the GPU and EmulationStation doesn't have enough video memory to work properly, see https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Manual-Installation/#verify-the-allocated-video-memory-memory-split.
Any reason you're not using the RetroPie supplied image for the Pi Zero ? RetroPie uses Raspberry Pi OS Lite (Buster) underneath, it's the same OS.

Thanks I'll try that. I want Raspian as my boot and main, i'm not very skilled with all this pi stuff, still learning as I go.

Can I install Retropie and have Raspbian boot first? Even still, the full Raspbian download has more than the GUI desktop which I know I can install easily. I need the HW accelerated media player it comes with along with a few other things and had a lot of trouble getting it to work myself.

I can have a 2nd SD card for ReteoPie but would still like Raspbian to boot first. I would also still like to solve this problem regardless for me and others in the future. Seems your suggestion will probably work(although for me nothing ever works). Fingers crossed, thanks again, will return with results and/or followup questions.

No.

Yes, since the VRAM is allocated from the main memory.
