ROM will not work
-
Hi, I'm new to this , so please be gentle .
I have a Rasperry-Pie 4 and have installed various games that work (Sega , Nintendo , Super Nintendo etc. )
On the NES Roms , I've been playing Super Mario Brothers (1986 ) with no issues but I noticed that when I got to world 4 , I cannot make the jumps to get over a certain obstacles , and noticed the the speed that Mario runs , is not sufficient to make that jump , so essentially I'm stuck.
Went on line and downloaded and installed on Retropie a different rom ( VS Super Mario VS.zip )because I watched a short video for the game and noticed right away the faster speed of Mario.
Ok, the game loads properly but I tried all buttons on the controller and ...nothing , wont start.
( I do have a cheep pad that resembles the original from Amazon ) could that be the problem ? , and like I said , the other games work just fine , is there something I'm doing wrong ?
Thank you for you time -
@daddyz said in ROM will not work:
VS Super Mario VS.zip
That game is meant for a slightly different system (VS unisystem, which is the arcade version of the nes), your emulator might not support it properly, or might need some config changes. Also, since it's an arcade game, you'll need to "insert coin" first before starting a game, in arcade emulators it's usually done through the select button, but the default mapping might be different on your nes emulator.

@daddyz You aren't comparing apples to apples here. VS Super Mario Bros is the arcade release. It runs faster than the home NES version and it has a higher difficulty. Even the timer runs faster. (You can verify this by trying to get 6 fireworks on a final flag. You have to start your run 2 seconds earlier on the timer in VS that you do in the home version in order to hit the timer right.) In the US, the game was in arcades before the NES version was widely available. (Much like how SMB3 was available for play on PlayChoice10 systems before you could buy the cartridge.) I'll never forget how easy the NES game was compared to the game I was playing at the corner store every day.

Thanks guys , did not know that the VS game was the arcade version .
After I read what was said , I tried to install it in the Arcade Rom section , but still , it did not load at all.
Just a heads up to all, I do not know how to "code ' things and so , I rely on You Tube videos to do simple tasks.
I'm 65 and I'm trying to learn but sometimes , its a little overwhelming.
So , going back , is there anything I can try to get the home version to work properly with my original issue .....the jumps and speed ?
Thank for been patient with me ...... -
@daddyz don't worry, there's no coding required to do anything in retropie :) if you want to play the home version, it shouldn't be via the arcade folder - you want the nes folder: https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Nintendo-Entertainment-System/ (and the regular non-VS version of the game)

@daddyz the VS version is also available as an NES rom. It does have an issue in that the VS games need color correction when played on an NES or NES emulator.
I have serious doubts about whether or not your game is really a problem. Once you get to World 4 you pretty much have to use the Run button (B) to make most of the jumps. I would prefer to assume that you are incredibly familiar with this game and would know that, though.

That's not how arcade emulation works, if you ever intend to play arcade games you'll need to read https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Arcade/

@daddyz never too old to enjoy retropie and all it has to offer. Don't ever shy away from asking anything on here too buddy. This is a friendly community who want to help no matter how trivial the problem may seem :)

I too was wondering if his problem could be this simple.

Hello all, sorry for taking so long to get back to you guys , I very much appreciate your help ( even though the links that some of you sent , I have no idea what to do with them .......will have to read some more.
Answering Thorr69 , I do know the game , still , when I get to 4-3 , no matter how I try , Mario will not jump high enough to make it to the next platform .
Also on a side note , when going for the flag at the end of each level , I can only jump to the "400 " mark , NEVER more than that , having said that , I used to play on my son's Nintendo System back in the day , and did pretty good so , right away I noticed that this version is actually slower ( Mario's running and jumping ).
Should I try different versions of the non VS game ?
Thanks a bunch -
@daddyz again, are you holding the run button (whatever you bound to B during initial setup)? you’ll know when you’re doing it because mario will run faster and jump higher. there’s no way of getting the top of the flag/doing many jumps without it.

Well.....I feel like an idiot , I can't believe that I made that mistake and didn't notice.
Had the A / B reversed .......now , I'm running like the Cops are after me !!!!!!
Thanks -
And don't ask how that happened :(

Guys , ladies ....all I have to say is ...YOU ROCK !!!!!!!
Thanks .......
BTW, I'm sure I'll be back to enjoy your wisdom ...... Thanks again
