I am going to build a Retropie handheld.
Raspberry Pi: Zero, later Zero 2 (when really available)
      Display: Ili9341 (SPI, 2.2" with 320x240 pixels)

I am not really sure about the buttons and analog sticks.
Relevant Consoles (approximate resolution + buttons) :
      GB: 160x144, 6 Buttons + Start + Select
      GBA: 240x160, 8 Buttons + Start + Select
      NES: 256x224, 6 Buttons + Start +Select
      SNES: 256x224, 10 Buttons + Start + Select
      Megadrive: 320x224, 10 Buttons + Start + Select
      PSX: 320x240-640x480, 12 Buttons + Start + Select + (2 optinal Analog)
      N64: 320x240-640x480, 13 Buttons + Start + Analog

Simple option: GB-SNES, resolution sufficient, Pi Zero nearly sufficient, 10 Buttons + Start + Select + Hotkey
PSX option: GB-PSX, PSX resolution problematic, Pi Zero critical/Pi Zero 2 sufficient, 12 Buttons + Start + Select + Hotkey
      N64 option: GB-N64, PSX/N64 resolution problematic, Pi Zero 2 critical (?), 13 (+) Buttons + Start + Select + Hotkey + Analog

How bad is it to play a game with more resolution than the display? For what option would you go? Of course a handheld with less buttons is easier to build and has a smaller form factor.

@MSP430 so far none of the systems you mentioned go over the resolution of your display. The PlayStation has a few games that go over, like tekken 3, or silent hill in the menus, but I’m sure it’ll look fine on a lower resolution display, if not a tad fuzzy and text might be harder to read in the higher resolutions.
Just know that PlayStation and especially n64 will be iffy on a pi zero. Not sure about a zero 2 for PlayStation, but n64 on a pi4 has many performance issues which is much more powerful than any zero.
