Me and a friend have been playing some multiplayer via RetroArch PC to PC. Works great and all but I though it would be awesome if it was possible to play multiplayer RetroPie and PC.

At the moment I have a rpi3. Don't remember what version of RetroArch and RetroPie I have on there and I haven't really tried multiplayer with RetroPie.

But does it work? If it does, it just a matter of having the same version of RetroArch on both system? And ofc same game files.

@lesk I played online with a Raspberry Pi 3B+ and a hacked Switch console through Retroarch's Netplay fetaure. (It can be kind-of a PITA to get the same versions of everything, but it's possible.) I was in the USA (Pennsylvania) and he was in the UK (London area). We played Metal Slug as if we were standing next to each other at an arcade cabinet. That was in 2021.

Some tricks are needed when it comes to savestate compatibility (hence netplay) between 32bits and 64bits, i don't guarantee every core is handling this properly.

I think @barbudreadmon is referring to the core's source code, and not to a configuration option in RetroArch. If the Libretro core used has implemented a 32/64 bit clean save state format, then netplay will work.

datatype sizes aren't the same between those 2 archs, so you have to find some mean to pad them if you need to save them.
