So yeah, it does that. I don't want it to.

It used to have me press start and select at the same time to exit games but for some reason after I remapped a controller (a USB switch pro controller, by PowerA) it now just does start.

I set my hotkey enable to select, then I did none and did default, then I tried the home button on the controller but nothing seems to work.

I'm on a RetroPie with games flashed on there connected to a TV. A buddy of mine just put it together for me to use some I'm not exactly sure what he did or all of the config files and stuff. I do have a USB keyboard that I've been using to control the device, so if that is needed I can use it.

If possible I'd like to avoid having to edit files directly but if it is needed I can. I feel like this is just a simple fix.

      Thank you.

You can try reconfiguring your controller in EmulationStation; this should rewrite the RetroArch autoconfig including the hotkey-enable function. If that doesn't work, however...

        Unfortunately, neither are we.

It is not practical to troubleshoot a system that neither you nor we have any idea how is configured. For that reason, third-party builds are not supported in any capacity.

        Start here: https://retropie.org.uk/docs/First-Installation/#installation

I suggest you to backup your roms and configs, and then install the current latest official image for your hardware from https://retropie.org.uk/download.

Restore your backed-up roms but not the configs yet -- you can cherry-pick them later but if you blindly copy them all, the one that's causing your issue will come along with the rest of them.
