I own a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ (Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ Starter Kit) and installed Retropie recently. I also recently installed ScummVM to it through the following method:

RetroPie Setup Script -> Manage packages -> Manage optional packages -> scummvm

I chose to install via binary (should I install from source?). ScummVM appears in my RetroPie Emulator List with the option +Start SCUMMVM. ScummVM GUI opens when I select it.

Now, I'm rather confused to how I go about installing ROM. According to this page, I need to have dedicated folder to each game. That's fine: I have folders from setting up my small catalog of games that I've gotten to work in ScummVM on my PC.

I copy/paste the game folders I have on my PC to \\retropie\roms\scummvm. When I click Add Game, each of the folders comes up (minus Monkey Island 2, not sure why). I select the game folder and I get the options to setup the ID, Name, etc. I just keep everything at default settings.

      Now here comes the problems:

      • If I click to start a ROM in the ScummVM GUI: the screen goes black, I get told it's loading ... and then it immediately crashes to EmulationStation.
      • If I go to start the ROMs via EmulationStation (they do show up listed under ScummVM) and I select the game: the screen goes black, I get told it's launching (with Press a button to configure) ... and then it immediately crashes to EmulationStation.

      What could be the problem?

      • Should I consider installing ScummVM from source? ScummVM itself seems to be working just fine.
      • Am I missing key files to setup these ROMs? I don't get any kinds of errors when I Add the Games in the ScummVM GUI.
      • Do I need to modify any of the ScummVM Global Options/Settings or individual Game Options/Settings?
      • Maybe something else entirely?

With what games do you have this issue ? Can you try with lr-scummvm (experimental packages) to see if the games are working here ? I suggest also to update your system if you haven't done it.

Edit: I just remember something from the day that was using RPi3. Can you change the Graphic mode to OpenGL in the ScummVM gui and try again the games that don't run?

My English isn't at a good level.
