Take a look into this similar topic : https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/34473/help-building-kodi-19

Why has the previous post been deleted and the account banned with the comment "spam"? It only pointed out how to install Kodi 19 via deb-multimedia packages on RetroPie 4.8 and that it works without any problem so far.

If it was a problem that it has been posted in the following two additional topics about the very same topic:

      • https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/34473/help-building-kodi-19

to make the users aware of that possible solution (they would very likely miss it otherwise) then the moderation team should please make sure that only a single thread about the same question exists / is open (seems how to use a more recent Kodi version is a recurring topic, and it might be even more recurring now that the TMDb scraper is broken in Kodi 18 with the only solution to use Kodi 19+).

New account posting the same message to multiple topics (some of them old or very old) is spam for me. Did you register just to post the Kodi link ?

Spamming is the use of messaging systems to send multiple unsolicited messages to large numbers of recipients for the purpose of commercial advertising, for the purpose of non-commercial proselytizing, for any prohibited purpose, or simply repeatedly sending the same message to the same user.

Nothing of that did fit to that messages, no Kodi link was included in the message and the topics it was posted were not resolved (so it doesn't matter that they were old).

The only purpose was to help people stuck on a outdated 18.x version of Kodi including broken / not working TMDb scrapers shipped within RetroPie 4.8 to get a more recent version of Kodi with a working scraper again.

I just had the same problem like other users in multiple threads (the above are only three out of a few additional), didn't found any help / solution in the forums here and posted the solution which worked for me after spending some time to find one on my own. If such help is not wanted then so be it...

It does matter, bumping old topics is bad forum etiquette. You should have opened a new topic and post your solution there.

Spammers today are very inventive and their posts are disguised with old replies or legitimate messages taken from somewhere else, after they come back and edit their messages and insert links or change the content. As forum moderator, I can tell you these things happen quite often.

But this wouldn't help the other users in the existing threads to get notified by the new solution nor would it help if people are ending up via a search engine (like i did) on the existing "unresolved" threads.

AFAICT bumping old topics is only bad forum etiquette if using things like "i have the same problem" or similar, but not if it actually solves / answers an existing unresolved topic (actually i wasn't looking for a solution so no new thread required).

I understand that it is always difficult for the moderation team to differentiate between spammers and non-spammers, but then at least i would suggest that all existing threads (only did a short search, there might be more):

              • https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/30138/kodi-19-matrix-on-retropie
              • https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/34473/help-building-kodi-19 (The user here only wants to build Kodi from sourced due to the outdated Kodi 18.x on RetroPie and no availability of packages)
              • https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/31718/kodi-19

on how to update Kodi are getting locked and only pointing on a single thread (maybe this one?) which has the hint on using the package from deb-multimedia.

They do get notified when the topic is referenced.

Good to know, seems a good feature of this forum software. I would need to have known that beforehand and linked all threads to get them notified which wasn't the case until it was mentioned now.

Nevertheless it is IMHO still bad behavior if i need to create a new thread just to post a solution rather then posting the solution directly in the existing and still unresolved threads.

But your forum / rules, will be off now and hope that the other users will somehow find the solution they had been looking for.

Ah, and to have it now included as the last post in this topic so users can find the solution:

At least i was able to install Kodi 19 on my RetroPie 4.8 setup / installation by using the packages of the deb-multimedia "oldoldstable backports (buster-backports)" repositories.

@c71wT6xl how did you actually do this? Cant you just tell me if not in pm so I can post it myself, but then in this post one last time? I have been looking everywhere for a solution and (as you had this exact thing Happen too) Google just called me a c*** when I searched for how to do this (and thats the nice "PC" way of saying it!!).

I'm kind of pissed that I actually find a solution only to have it silenced (I think thats how my spell check spells silenced) but at the same time I completely 100% can see and understand where the mod is coming from in what he's saying. In a nutshell, your both in the right... But for 2 totally different reasons. Both of which has not solved this issue!

So if its OK with the mod, can you please post your solution as he now knows your not a spam bot or just trolling. I would love to see how to do this... And yes! You bet your ass ill be archiving it to the wayback machine so there's always a way to help everyone out.

I hope you get back to this message, as for the mod, Jesus just tell us what he said if he does not come back... Its important. Cheers mates. Again, 100% understand what your saying and why you did this. Just want a solution to my problem. ;)

@TeknoRaver Can't remember exactly as i don't have the notes anymore but it was basically something like:

                        1. Keep the current Kodi 18 installed
                        2. Make a backup of the Kodi internal database (see Kodi Wiki)
                        3. Add the https://deb-multimedia.org/ repositories to your system by following the "For buster-backports (oldoldstable-backports)" instructions on the main page
                        4. Run "apt-get update"
                        5. Install Kodi via "apt-get install -t oldoldstable-backports kodi"
                        6. You might need to install some libraries manually before via e.g. the following but apt-get should tell you which: "apt-get install -t oldoldstable-backports libavdevice-dev libavdevice58 libcdio-cdda2 libcdio-paranoia2 libavcodec58 libavfilter7 libavformat58 libavutil56"

@c71wT6xl Hello, I've tried to install Kodi 19 using your notes. I did exactly as you wrote, but unfortunately it doesn't work at all :-(

If I launch kodi by the Ports menu, I get black screen for a short time and then it goes back to Emulation Station. Suggestions?

@harukasan Unfortunately not. But Kodi on Retropie has some logs here:

                              ~/.kodi/temp/kodi.log

which could give some hints why Kodi isn't starting anymore. In case if it helps this is the list of installed packages for the current working Kodi 19.5 on my system. Maybe you e.g. have some older or mixed versions installed?

@c71wT6xl Hi, after some effort I managed to get Kodi 19.5 on Retropie with your instructions and I have exactly the same package versions that you mentioned. But joystick and inputstream don't work at all. Would you have any suggestions or any additional steps you took?

@jajalobrit Hi, How did you manage to get Kodi 19.5? I followed the same instructions but I got to the same situation like @harukasan that I am no more able to run Kodi. Also did you solve the joystick anyhow?

                                  Thanks,
