Many previously working Final Burn Alpha games no longer boot up after 4.1 update.
-
@silentq Yeah, it's all change on the romset. 0.175 for lr-fbalpha and 0.154 for lr-fba.
-
Oddly this doesn't affect Neo Geo? I notice most of the games work I guess I should upgrade my romset just in case there also.
-
@silentq Once you run roms outside of the required set anything can happen. Some may work, some may not. Others will have changed, some wont and will carry on working. Just grab the dat file from:
https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/Managing-ROMs and run it on your set with clrmamepro or if its old, you are probably better off getting a newer one. -
So odd so I upgraded my FBA roms and the ones that didn't play still don't play. I completely deleted my old ones and put my new ones onto my Pi. I used the "FB Alpha v0.2.97.39 Arcade Games" DAT provided at the wiki. I am not sure why they wouldn't work with the matching version. I double checked my games are booting in lr-fbalpha. Am redoing the ctrl-mame pro process I am really unsure why this wouldn't just work it worked fine last time?
-
@silentq i just downloaded the full FBA .39 set and didn't rebuild anything. works fine here. we'll need an example of the zip contents (names and sizes) of a rom that's not working for you to diagnose your issue further.
-
@silentq Remember if you are "upgrading" from an older set to a newer set using clrmamepro, it could be problematic. I had a 0.111 set and had no problems going to get the dat file needed to generate the 0.73 set. However, going the other way, who knows what would happen. My advice now would be to get a new verified set. If your roms aren't running, they are not the correct set even if you think they are. Did you upgrade ALL the roms? if not, you are straying into the zone of rom randomness where you will have no clue which one is what.
-
Ok you may have nailed it. I had my set using the old set which I think I downgraded because I had a newer set to get it working in the first place. Now that I am upgrading I would imagine that would be problematic.
-
Just as an aside I have to say going to .175 for FBA seems a bit of a jump if you ask me. The readily available roms on the web mostly seem to be at .161. I could see this presenting a big issue for many people wanting to upgrade to 4.1. Any reason behind the thinking of jumping to such a new version considering what is actually out there now?
-
@silentq .161 was already way behind what FBA .38 needed :)
every FBA release seems to sync up with whatever the current mame romset is. not much we can do about that.
-
One other question will the .38 romset work with .39 I seem to see those two versions used pretty interchangeably?
-
I don't know what else to do. I updated all of my mame roms to .175 still the same roms are failing. I guess I will stick with fba2012 since it seems to work right.
-
I did a little more research and I am not sure if I have found a bug now. So upon settling on fbaalpha2012 in cases where roms were no longer working I noticed a bit of a pattern and it makes me wonder if the bios built into some of these emulators are broken. For example lr-fbalpha fails on nearly every single Capcom game but it works perfectly on every single Konami game. Likewise every single Capcom game works perfectly on lr-fbaalpha2012 but doesn't work at all on lr-fbalpha. In every single case for all my roms if one emulator didn't work the other did. So this leads me to wonder if something is up with the emulators themselves?
-
@silentq I would say not. In my experience it is always an incorrect romset. Next you should post an example of which rom fails on which emulator together with the files in that rom and we can tell you if it's the correct rom or not. Also, I have started obtaining full reference sets when upgrading to remove similar issues. They are already verified and work out of the box.
-
Yeah still not working this is the .38 reference set version of Alien Vs Predator:
This is the parent of split set. I have usually in the past had no problem just using the parents in Final Burn Alpha.

@silentq cps2 roms now require a .key file inside each zip. An updated romset will have them included. It doesn't have to be exactly .175. Anything higher is fine. I did find them by googling the .178 set
-
@dankcushions and @dankcushions this was exactly the information I needed to see, after applying some update packs I see the key files you are talking about. That must have been the big change messing with all my roms. After some messing about ctrlmamepro I I think i should be able to get this to work now that I am seeing the proper files. Thank you so much.
-
I confirm, anything above .175 is fine as long as the rom has the .key files in it. Also on a side note, in the new romset all the cps3 games are just one file each, no more original and no cd clones, which is great if you are planning on having a cabinet with mainly cps2 and cps3 games.

Not all are compatible. I forget the exact percentage of the ones I use, but maybe 5 out of 60 of my 0.173 roms didn't work with the new 0.175 lr-fbalpha.

Hello everyone,
I am new at Retropie, but old at emulator world. I did not care romset until now jeje. I have FBA .38 romset and use ctrlmamepro guide to convert at .39. I can confirm many games dont work :( on lr-fbalpha.
Thanks to all, it's an excellent project.
