I been trying to set up retro pie for a couple of days now. I format a sandisk 32 Gb usb stick as fat32( default) then I create a folder called retropie. Next I put it in my raspberry pi3 and wait between 30 seconds to an hour for it to stop flashing. I did this about 10 times waiting for differenet amounts of time. Then I took it out and plug it in my desktop. Open files and went to my usb drive click on retro pie and nothing was in the folder.

@Bear-Claw enable USB ROM service using the RetroPie Setup menu in GUI, reboot and try again. It should automatically create all the sub-folders within the retropie folder you created for you to add ROMs to. Have you also considered transferring the ROMs over your network? Use Samba or WinSCP.

If this service is enabled and he copies ROMS to the USB flash into the newly created folders and then reinserts the USB into the retropie does it auto copy of the roms to the internal storage or simply play them from the USB?

@sumerian It should copy them to the SD card inserted in the Pi.

@sumerian If you want to play ROMs from a USB rather than transferring them to your Pi this can also be achieved. All the instructions are in the wiki. I don't do it myself. I have 300+ hand chosen ROMs on a 32GB card. I still have 21GB available, even with all the other stuff I have on the card. Saying that, I don't use anything over 16bit Systems and standalone MAME/ aracade games. Full ROM sets are pointless, with too much crap and not needed by the "ordinary" gamer.

@columboscoat thank you very much, I hope I didn't hijack this too much.

@Bear-Claw ok. Lets go back to the start. The first thing I would recommend is reinstalling the image. And then everyone knows you have a stock set-up.
