Our friend @meleu is still quite busy, but he's asked me to run these for a while until things calm down for him. Apologies for the delay, but I've been away on business and have just landed in the lovely Schiphol airport in Amsterdam on my way home, which thankfully has free Wifi, so we can get moving with the 18th MAME ROW. Due to the delay in posting we'll announce the results of the poll on Thursday.

This is the 18th MAME Random Of the Week

The three random numbers for this week are: 866, 472 and 325

      866
      Game Name: Kick Rider
      Company: Universal
      Year: 1984
      ROM file name: kickridr.zip

      472
      Game Name: Dream Soccer '94
Company: Irem (Data East Corporation license)
      Year: 1994
      ROM file name: dsoccr94.zip

      325
      Game Name: Cosmos
      Company: Century Electronics
      Year: 1981
      ROM file name: cosmos.zip

      http://www.strawpoll.me/12185107

We will check the most voted game on Thursday. So we have Tuesday and Wednesday for experimentations.

      What is the MAME ROW?

MAME ROW stands for MAME Random Of the Week. We randomly select an arcade game from the 0.78 MAME ROMset to play on the week. The idea is to play games we've never played before, interact with other forum members, post hi-scores, share game strategies, fun facts, and (the most important) HAVE FUN!

There's no need to use RetroPie to join the MAME ROW! You can play it on any platform you want.

Every Monday we create a topic at the "General Discussion and Gaming" forum section with the 3 random games to be voted. And on Wednesday we check the results.

The current week's game thread is just where there are more people interacting/talking about the game(s). Feel free to post your hi-score (or any content about the game) anytime you want on the previous "rounds" topics (links below).

These "rules" are constantly being improved!

Explaining the randomness of the process

I took the 0.78 compatibility list and applied the following filters (in this order):

      1. Parent: (empty)
      2. Rpi 3 Status: (empty), OK, Untested
      3. Rpi 2 Status: OK, Untested
      4. Rpi 1 Status: Untested
      5. Manufacturer: clear the "bootleg" checkbox

Saved a new spreadsheet with only the results of those filters here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/13Q7QEqV5lUo662nvAC3zS_AvQvsjspEcGHVhaHcyzbI/edit?usp=sharing

And then went to www.random.org and generated a random number between 2 and 2185 (ignoring 1 because of the column headers).

      Links to the previous "rounds"

      • Phoenix (not randomly chosen)
      • New Rally-X (not randomly chosen)
      1. Bosconian
      2. Blue's Journey / Raguy
      3. Lizard Wizard
      4. 4-D Warriors
      5. Raiga - Strato Fighter
      6. Pang!
      7. Air Duel
      8. Pac & Pal
      9. Puyo Puyo 2
      10. Forgotten Worlds
      11. Moon Cresta
      12. Frenzy
      13. Wanted
      14. Cop 01
      15. Aliens
      16. Mystic Riders
      17. Scion

My vote is gonna have to go to Cosmos, not that big a fan of racing games or soccer in general. And...its the only game I can play in study hall.

soccer looks good but just not a fan of the sport. kick rider seems a little to basic gameplay so Cosmos it is even though it plays like an Astro Blaster clone.

Kick Rider looks like a precursor to Road Rash!

Soccer isn't a big deal here in the US even though my cousin loves it!

The video @obsidianspider posted for Cosmos make me think you could play it while wearing those old Red/Cyan Cardboard 3D glasses.

For some reason I'm getting no sound in Cosmos. Actually, that's not quite true, I get all the speech, but none of the firing or explosion sounds which you can hear on the Youtube video. I had a look on the web for a samples file for Cosmos but didn't find anything - is it using a samples set from a different game perhaps, like Frenzy did?

With or without sound though, it does seem like a pretty unremarkable shooter. At one point my gun stopped firing altogether, not sure what happened there!

Kick Rider is an interesting idea, basically Road Rash about 7 years before it's time. But it doesn't really feel like you are totally in control. Especially when careering into an island in the middle of the road that you didn't get time to avoid.

Despite being from the UK, I'm not a huge football (soccer) fan, but I do like football video games from time to time. Dream Soccer '94 seems to be lacking some of the humour of similar games (e.g. the more fun to play 'Football Champ' which predates this game by four years, but where you can grab hold of players shirts, punch them in the face and knock over the referee! (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Football_Champ)), and I am pretty appalling at it - in the 3 games I played, I got beaten 1-0, 1-0 and 2-0 (never scored a single goal!)

I'm not sure how we would be able to score it (points or goal difference) but this week my vote goes to Dream Soccer.

                    Okay here's my starter for 10 - 96000.

Every score seems to be a multiple of 1000!

It plays with full sound on my PC, where it became apparent that the guns overheat and you need to slow down (that sample didn't work on my picade cab) so that explains the no firing issue I had before.

It seems to start warning you about low fuel in plenty of time, I think I passed another couple of waves after the low fuel warning before picking more fuel up.

The diagonal rocket wave always finishes me off though!

@GtBFilms Which samples are you using? There's a really creepy voice at the beginning and no sound when playing with lr-mame2003 on my RetroPie x86 system.

                        @obsidianspider

Yeah I was getting that on lr-mame2003 on the rpi as well - some speech, but no sound effects.

I ended up playing it on my PC under MAME 0.146 (which is what I have running under a Maximus Arcade front end). I have a whole directory of samples on there, but none which seem to be for cosmos.zip.

Under that, the same rom - cosmo.zip (22kb) runs with all the sound effects working - there also appears to be a bit more speech.

I tried various rom versions and mame version combinations on the rpi, but either couldn't get it to run at all, or at best, got it to run with only digitised speech, no sound effects.

In the end I decided it wasn't a dealbreaker game that I wanted to mess about too much to get working properly under retropie.

Never could get this to launch in Mame2003. Always just dumped me out.

Too bad, this one looked fun.

Thanks @GtBFilms ... I was starting to wonder if we were going to have a #19 ;-)

Also, thank you @obsidianspider for filling in for @meleu again!
