Custom theme - white screen of death (how many images/objects can i load?)

I'm doing a theme similar to tronkyfrank but if i load too many images the theme crashes.

So quick questions:

is there a limit in images to background or size (KB)?
if i load an object, calling it again will it load again or use the first time it was loaded as a reference? (load view system, and load again on detailled view, for example)

I believe there is a limit to the number of objects loaded because i've tried to reduze the image size and it proved useless, can anyone provide me any feedback regarding this matter?

@giventofly there is a fix for the white screen of death, somewhere on this forum.

@lilbud the fix that i know is to load less stuff.

I believe the WSOD fix has been officially merged into Emulation Station, so updating the RetroPie setup script and then updating Emulation Station should do the trick.

I was playing around with customizing the Simple theme the other night and kept getting the WSOD, my problem was I was making all of the ES background as full 1080p... downscaling all my backgrounds to 1280x720 fixed it for me, currently have 13 systems and no issues.

@giventofly It's a known very old issue from Emulationstation, it's happens when you have a bit more than 10 systems, and there is an amazing @fieldofcows work in progress and experimental builds for fixing that.

You can use windows version for theming without problems, or download the experimental build here:

It's done and merged into RetroPie. You just have to update to the latest version using the retropie script.

apparently not fixed as the latest post was 12 months ago and any recent installs still seem to have this issue.
