L and R shoulder buttons used to function as fast scrolling on a previous setup of mine (on my Pi 2 last year).

Even though they are correctly set up with my iBuffalo gamepad in both ES and RA, on ES they don't do anything.

Any ideas? They were faster than pressing up/down but slower than holding up/down (that's way too fast), giving a very convenient browsing experience.

I have tried searching about this, it doesn't seem that anyone has reported such an issue.

I am using a Pi 3 with the "official" power supply, RP 4.1, installed from the SD image and I have only connected one iBuffallo SNES-style USB controller.

My previous setup was a Pi 2 with 3.6 (if I remember correctly) plus some updates and the same controller.

@matchaman Go to RetroPie-Setup / Configuration / Tools / EmulationStation and reset the input configuration then reboot and reconfigure your controller.

regarding searching - the main this was I had no idea what version of retropie you were running etc. It helps to know the set-up to be able to advise. Note in the link we ask for filename of which image etc, so please try and be as specific as you can.

            The image name was retropie-4.2-rpi2_rpi3.img.gz

I have tried that several times and the buttons are indeed registered correctly.

It just seems like the feature of scrolling with the shoulder buttons is gone :/

Do the buttons work in games? Do they work with jstest? Just trying to determine that it's not a problem with your controller. Do you have any other controllers you could test with?

Yes, the buttons have been working fine with jstest. After a few hours of hopeless resetting and deleting button configuration files, I tried a different port. Problem solved!

I still can't explain why a different port would let L & R work on ES while the actual inputs were detectable...

Now my only issue are phantom inputs, as discussed here: https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/8598/buffalo-controllers-phantom-inputs
