tested it just now with my system, which is going on about a month without being updated so FB Alpha v0.2.97.39 835951a. not the same version as you obviously, but might help narrow down a potential bug.

music plays fine as long as the Neo Geo mode is set to MVS in the retroarch options menu. switching to AES will cause the music to drop out when approaching the lvl 1 boss as you have described. further testing of the UNIBIOS mode i noticed some graphical glitches/black background textures.

all other system options are set to their defaults. if you want to verify, the md5sums of the contents of my blazstar.zip & neogeo.zip are pasted here:

      https://pastebin.com/s1BRNHWM

edit: after further testing in AES mode, changing the BIOS to NeoOpen seems to work fine. i haven't tested others, so maybe it's the default BIOS (MVS Asia/..) that has this trouble?

I just updated to the latest build of RetroPie 4.2.3 and played through a few times on a Pi3-based system and it worked just fine for me.

I have 3 Pi3 systems, one with Retropie 4.1, another with 4.2 and one with 4.2.5 and have the exact same issue on the 3...

@NightRune I'm not sure how you're running RetroPie 4.2.5 as I just updated my systems two hours ago and they're at 4.2.3

That said, if you're having the same problem on all three systems, maybe it's your ROM?

@obsidianspider Sorry, i meant to say 4.2.3 and not 4.2.5.

I also tought about the rom being the issue but tried different ones and have the exact same problem.

@chipsnblip could you please clarify how you change the BIOS to NeoOpen?

sure, start the rom and from the retroarch menu (Select+x) it's under Quick Menu>Options>BIOS. from there you can cycle through all the different BIOS files conatined in neogeo.zip,as well as set the mode to MVS

I never encountered the problem with Blazing Star when trying it ~5 times, but when playing Night Warriors, I didn't get music in the first stage. I couldn't reproduce the problem after restarting the game 3-4 times. This missing music might be a rare bug.

No problems for me too (lr-fbalpha .40 on Pi 3).

Is it possible that the aes has a ram/cpu limitation or something that may be the reason why it disables the music during the boss fights?
