@mitu Thanks! By total chance I just found the same thing. I don't know why that configuration menu is not mentioned in the retropie docs. Hopefully this post will help someone else in the future

@SDKrt said in Sound gets slowly lost:

      Is that enough?

Not really, I'm not sure which version you have installed or what emulator you're using (EmulationStation is only a front-end which launches the actual emulators for the game).

What game are you playing ? If you take out the amplifier and connect the audio directly to a headphone/speaker do you get the same problem.

@uncledisgusting said in lr-genesis-plus-gx master system sound garbled after restoring save states - all games affected:

My pi 4 isn't overclocked - what settings would you suggest I use for that please?

I don't have any recommendation, as i said i don't own a pi4. I'm just thinking that garbled sound can be the result of performance issues, and gpgx appears to be surprisingly demanding. So i'm wondering if an overclock could improve things.

@uncledisgusting said in lr-genesis-plus-gx master system sound garbled after restoring save states - all games affected:

      should they be enabled?

Probably not, they are features that will lessen performances.

On a sidenote, savestates with the nuked setting appear to be broken to me : i just tried loading my savestates from yesterday and the core crashed, after some more tests it appears the core can't load savestates from another session on my setup (it works just fine if i set it to MAME). That might be related to your issue. Maybe report this to the author, and/or change setting/emulator.

There are no performance issues whatsoever playing a game with nuked sound in the initial session

Your sidenote issue IS the issue that I have been concerned with the whole time. Thank you for corroborating that. I think this emulator is the only one with nuked fm sound.

      You missed my other question:

@Clyde said in Sound Problem acter the last update:

Installed from the official Retropie image or a third-party image?

I.e. did you download Retropie from https://retropie.org.uk/download/ or somewhere else?

Can you please add more info about your system, as requested in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first ?
How are you trying to wake up the system - keyboard, controller, etc ? If you're running a screensaver, consider disabling the power saving option in ES.

For the audio part, try adding audio_pwm_mode=2 to your /boot/config.txt and see if it improves the sound cutting part.

@deceased10 turn the volume to 100%. Use the menu to quit and shutdown. During that shutdown process it will save your settings.

@markwkidd @mitu I have just made it a habit to update my Retropie system and packages from time to time. Of course, an update may break something, but I think the benefits outweigh the risks by far in general.

That did it! Rampage is back to normal now. Captain Silver no longer has static but the sound still degrades after 30 seconds or so which may just be how that one is.

Well. Here i am again. Was playing the whole evening and the soundproblems have started again. Its like a degradation over time or something. I know it was perfectly fine after reinstalling the image, was testing it for quite some time out.

What can be the reason for such a weird problem? Like gimme anything you have. Far-fatched or not i dont mind.

@mitu Thanks for the quick response. I just ended up using my Pi1 and used a 2.5 speaker jack. Odd reason that pi3 did not want to pick up the 2.5 speaker jack or find the USB speaker... Weird.

@pjft I guess I could try that. It was working fine till yesterday so version 4.3.1 was good for awhile.
What version are you thinking I should try?

I have been thinking about it and what might have happened but I don't know how to fix it is.
I had the videos playing for screen saver and the audio turned off for screen saver only. Let it run that way for a few hours every so often. Sometimes I would hear sound jump in and out. Like a noise from the other room. Then yesterday I noticed I didnt have any sound.
The reason I had it on so often and wasn't playing is I'm a designer working on a theme. Was wondering if this could be the source of the trouble?

Since no one chimed in I blew away my setup and started over moving step by step to identify where the audio broke.

The power button configuration was the culprit. The script worked for the power button perfectly powering on and off the Pi but killed audio from the Mifiberry AMP 2. Upon further researching the reason behind the issue was that the Mifiberry AMP 2 uses several GPIO pins to communicate between itself and the Pi3. Of course one of which is the same pin the power button configuration script uses.

I have since tried to modify the script to use a different GPIO pin (GPIO 5, pin 19). The script works to power off the Pi but not on. Further research told me that the script doesn't power on just off and that I can solder in a header or use pins 5/6 (GPIO3/GND) to power on the Pi. Given the Mifiberry, it looks like my only option is to use the header which is doable but I'd prefer to have only one power button that performs both power on and off functions.

Is there a way I can meet my goal via script, resistors, etc given what I have to work with, a long button press for off maybe? I thought about wiring the button to both the reset header pins as well as off function pins (19/20) but don't believe the Pi will know what to do with that input.

      Any ideas? Thanks

Here is the link to script I ran from. Here.

Here is the info from Mifiberry.
