What have you tried so far that hasn't worked? Were you able to map the controls through Emulation Station? If so, are you able to navigate through the menus? Keep in mind that if this is not the first controller you've mapped, you must press the 'start' button of whatever controller you mapped previously to bring up the menu that will allow you to map further controllers.
-
You may also need a keyboard to press tab to open the configuration menu depending on the version of Mame you're using

following this, i suggest this layout:
D-PAD UP Y X L D-PAD LEFT D-PAD RIGHT B A R D-PAD DOWN (coin button) SELECT (player start) START
(this follows the SNES controller layout for street fighter 2). this will work well with lr-fbalpha and lr-mame2003, at least.

Thank you guys for your support,
@mediamogul to answer the first question. yes i inserted the joystick in the Raspberry Pi it was detected as generic controller in Emulation station. then i went to control mapping. i couldnt map the buttons the right way.@herb_fargus i ve tried that and the Mame doesnt take the keyboard enter key to enter a menu nor anything.. it stays there the menu is shown but no access.
@dankcushions i would appreciate if you can assist further and show me how to do it, my little boy is so eager to play with these games and i feel very helpless.
thank you all guys for your contributions.

@DjGamer
so when you get to this section: https://github.com/retropie/retropie-setup/wiki/First-Installation#configure-controllersare you not able to map the buttons when prompted?
-
@dankcushions I get there I insert the joystick USB and then the buttons doesn't match with the image. check the joystick image and you will see. that's where I get lost on how to map them.
-
As long as the controller is detected, you can map the buttons any way you see fit. The visual setup only makes reference to a SNES-compatible control scheme to best mirror RetroArch controls, as well as the majority of controllers out there. Your layout doesn't share the SNES design, but you should be able to simply map them in whatever order makes the most sense to you.

@dankcushions Thank you very much for your help.
I would appreciate if you have an idea how to map the coins button for the NeoGeo or the MAME emulator. because that controller I posted the picture, doesn't look like an NES controller. so a bit hard to map.
sorry if I am very dumb in this geek world. I am just trying to make it work for my kid.

The appearance doesn't really matter. Read my post above for more.

As long as you're using FBA and MAME emulators that begin with "lr-", whatever button you map as 'Select' in Emulation Station will operate as the button that adds coins.

i'm not sure if it helps but there's other examples of other controller types here: https://github.com/retropie/retropie-setup/wiki/RetroArch-Configuration#default-core-controls-for-all-emulators
