How to do custom button layout?

I am building a RetroPie handheld. I am using a USB controller for the buttons, but is there any way we could extend the buttons on the controller though a wire and use it to make a custom button layout?

@Pixel0501 not sure what you exactly mean, but every controller has its own config (at least for the ReteoArch cores/emulators). It's usually at
/opt/retropie/configs/all/retroarch-joypads/JOYSTICK_NAME.cfg.
