Problem with NES overlays.
-
I'm having some trouble fitting my NES games to any of the 1920x1080 overlays. I know it's something I'm doing wrong but perhaps someone can point me in the right direction. The left and bottom sides of the screen do not seem to line up correctly.
Aspect Ratio: 4:3
Video Scale Integer: Disabled
Overscan: Disabled within lr-fceumm -
@beastmode Your top image looks different than the bottom one. Is the issue in both?
-
@muehltime It happens with certain games for the NES. Some games fit perfectly while others have that odd cropping on the left and bottom sides of the screen.
When starting those games they look as if they fit the overlay perfectly (image #1), once past the start menu though the actual gameplay screen looks wonky (image #2).

@beastmode
I think the behaviour is correct, on a real nes on a CRT TV those blank areas wouldn't be visible as they would be offscreen (overscan). Try changing the crop overscan options in lr-fceumm so it's cropping the overscan (essentially it will cut those areas off of the image before scaling) then it should fill the screen without the blank areas. -
I noticed gaps in my bezels for SNES/Genesis as well. I'll have to post some pictures. I wonder if these bezels need a tweak in order to fit right?
-
@greenhawk84
Which bezels are you using - can you post a link or upload the image here?The viewing area on the NES ones above is technically not wide enough. I just checked them and it's 1324x1080 pixels which isn't 4x3 - it should be 1440x1080.
-
@beastmode you should also try lr-nestopia. I find lr-fceumm screws up the resolution no matter if you use overscan or not. Even on a crt.

You're probably better setting up your own custom size and pos in the NES retroarch.cfg with.
custom_viewport_width =
custom_viewport_height =
custom_viewport_x =
custom_viewport_y =Then adjusting the overlay with something similar to this. This can save the head aches of random size variation and mis- alignment. Also alot of people who create Bezel overlays don't seem to center them properly as well. Which is why it's probably better off making it yourself.
-
@omnija Thanks. I'll give that a try.

@pjft @tmntturtlguy I'm having some trouble fitting my NES games to any of the 1920x1080 overlays.
Following 3 images show these settings:
Aspect Ratio: 4:3
Video Scale Integer: Disabled
Nestopia Overscan V = "disabled"
Nestopia Overscan H = "disabled"Everything looks fine at the start screen.
Some black bars on the sides, but able to see the complete image without cropping.
Right side of the screen seems to be placed correctly, but the left and bottom sides of the screen are completely messed up.
Following 3 images show these settings:
Aspect Ratio: 4:3
Video Scale Integer: Disabled
Nestopia Overscan V = "enabled"
Nestopia Overscan H = "enabled"Everything looks fine at the start screen.
The game fits the overlay, but there seems to be cropping on the top and bottom.
Cropping on the top left, right, and bottom right of the screen resulting in image loss. Notice the spider webs are missing.
This is the overlay file I am using:
-
@beastmode try going into retroarch and changing the video aspect ratio to set by core and see if that works.
-
@tmntturtlguy that gives me pretty much the same output as in the first 3 images. Black bars are on the left and bottom.
-
@beastmode What about setting a custom ratio? i would still set it to 4:3 but do it manually. Have you tried it with other roms in your NES folder? Could it be something weird within the rom itself?
-
@tmntturtlguy It happens with pretty much all of the NES roms and most Sega Master Drive as well. I'll try setting a custom ratio. SNES, Genesis work perfectly.
-
@beastmode Well it is good to know that you have a few systems working correctly. I know that i have some roms that have slightly different aspect ratios than others, so that is why I was asking it it happened on all of your roms in that system. It sound like it is.
Just for the heck of it, have you tried to see what happens in lr-fceumm?
-
@tmntturtlguy Same exact problem in lr-fceumm. I first had problems with that emulator before moving to lr-nestopia =).
-
I'd definitely ask you to post your RetroArch configurations for "all" and "NES" over pastebin if possible.
It is normal that some particular games seem to use different resolutions at times - on an original CRT things would either be cropped or sometimes have actual black borders. I'm not sure there will be a lot you can do in those cases.
That being said, we should probably at least attempt to minimize that effect here.
Send those over for us to take a closer look.

@pjft Okay. Here are the links.

@pjft @tmntturtlguy I was messing around with a few different overlay files and settings and have come up with different results. It does seem that some games have different aspect ratios or something.
Following images show these settings:
aspect ratio index = 22
custom_viewport_width = 1356
custom_viewport_height = 1012
custom_viewport_x = 281
custom_viewport_y = 22
video_scale = "5.000000"
video_scale_integer = "false"Overlay File.
