Can't get ethernet internet sharing working via Windows 10

I swear I've tried every tutorial and googled EVERYTHING on the topic! I have my Raspberry Pi B with RetroPie v4.3 connected via ethernet to my Windows 10 laptop hoping that it will share the internet connection. My Windows network config is all set to DHCP and sharing is on.

The Pi doesn't seem to have an IP address and it isn't on the network when I use an IP scanner.

On Windows the Ethernet shows "Unidentified connection"

I've tried rebooting both, even tried with a static IP but nothing seems to work - please help! Thanks :)

@localgrr you need to provide exact steps of what you've done so we aren't guessing.

Yes I did all of the steps in the top answer there but steps 5 & 6 don't work as no IP address is obtained.

Connect the Pi to PC's ethernet port using a regular ethernet cable
Go to "Network Connections" on the Windows PC and select the "Wireless Network Connection"
Right-click and select properties. In the "Sharing" tab under "Internet Connection Sharing" enable both checkboxes.
Restart your PC. This step is very important.

Although now I am tempted by a usb to ttl cable...

@localgrr I haven't really tested it myself with a laptop. But wifi dongles are cheap ;)

If it's the wireless connection you're after, you could just buy the RPi 3 model B that has built in wireless and bluetooth. You'll have to buy a new micro SD card also but you'll get better performance and you could use the old Pi for a project that requires less processing power

@localgrr are you using a straight cable or a crossover cable?

Shouldn't need a crossover cable as most computers can "do it themselves now"...but hey I can't argue that question. Windows 10 and the pi should be smart enough to do that though..

One of my PCs is from 2003 and I can directly connect with my pi via a cable no problem but you do need to have it set up correctly. ( I run linux not windows so I can't help sorry) Question though...can you hook into your router via a cable? if so I'll tell you that would be much easier...trust me. or as was said a wireless dongle..and your windows firewall my be blocking it as well..however I cation you MOST whole heartedly when I say..if you lower your firewall to get to your pi...DO NOT BE CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET..AT ALL! and do that because nothing else works!

The Pi has a 100Mb ethernet port with Auto MDI-X as far as I know.
So a crossover cable shouldn't be necessary.

All that I can suggest is to connect another device to the network port of the PC to see if the network connection is shared to that device correctly.
Then at least you know if the Pi or PC is to blame.

personally, when things like this take too long I give up, in this case I would just conenct the Pi directly to the router.
