    @tjuk though I fear that @mitu may be right here, two tests for that come to mind: 1st what happens if you just plug in an unconnected cable and 2nd have you tried any other OS besides retropie (Edit: ok, strictly speaking RetroPie ain't an OS - but I'll guess everyone understood what I meant :] ) ?

    @Clyde said in Adding roms directly:

    @UberLumby said in Adding roms directly:

    @UberLumby never mind lubuntu is giving me permission denied when copying files to the retropie sd LOL

    Linux distinguishes users by their user id (uid). If your uid on Lubuntu is different than that of pi on RetroPie (normally 1000), you won't have write access to it even if the username on both systems is the same, e.g. you made a pi user on Lubuntu just for that.

    Vice versa, you would have full access if the usernames are different but the uids are equal, say "pi" on RetroPie and "lubuntu" on Lubuntu both had the uid 1000 on their systems.

    You can see the uids and gid (group ids) of files and directories with the -n ("numeric ids") option of ls:

    $ ls -n drwxr-xr-x 6 1000 1000 4096 Apr 28 02:38 RetroPie drwxr-xr-x 7 1000 1000 4096 Sep 19 19:01 RetroPie-Setup

    If your uid and gid differ on RetroPie and Lubuntu, you could change the ownership of the directories only temporarily, and change them back after working with the files:

    sudo chown -R lubuntu /media/lubuntu/retropie/home/pi/retropie/roms/dreamcast # use your username or uid for "lubuntu" here. # Do your stuff. sudo chown -R 1000 /media/lubuntu/retropie/home/pi/retropie/roms/dreamcast # Provided that pi's uid is 1000 on RetroPie

    To me this is more "elegant" than the chmod way, as it doesn't mess with the files permissions. But this may be mere preference. And as with chmod, be sure to not to use it globally as it can mess up thinks equally bad. Use it only on directories where all files and subdirs have the same uid from the start.

    Okay noted thanks! My rom folder IS gonna be okay I hope hahaha

    @mcjacksebastian

    It looks like I hardly look here anymore either xD

    If you still have the design for your PCB, I'd love to see a copy of it :D

    @nextria I'd say dodgy LAN port or cable then.

    All that I can suggest is to connect another device to the network port of the PC to see if the network connection is shared to that device correctly.
    Then at least you know if the Pi or PC is to blame.

    personally, when things like this take too long I give up, in this case I would just conenct the Pi directly to the router.

    The raspberry pi 2 does NOT have any wireless built in. Now that being said you can use a wireless usb dongle. But that would be a problem for a different forum for sure.

    Remember you can always plug in an Ethernet cable to the rasp pi2 and then to your router then boot the pi headless or connect a monitor. (I have just connected my pi directly to my PC also.) You'll have to know how to get the IP it is assigned and then from there you can log in via ssh.

    You can always transfer any data to and from the pi "local" via a usb drive using midnight commander (the "filemanger" selection) in the retropie menu. Besides it is MUCH faster that way anyway.

    @mistersouji No, desoldering them will not have any power benefits. These connector ports are "passive" components and they do not draw power from the power supply until you physically install/connect a device into them.

    @THRobinson You can play with buttons by shorting pins if you have to.

    Another two days, and still no joy on Windows.
    I just read HERE, however, that installation of Apple Bonjour is recommended as a way to help the raspberry Pi getting an IP, when connecting it via direct ethernet cable on Windows...I don't really remember if I have already installed Bonjour or not...I will check tonight, anyway, and see if installing/reinstalling it does the trick.
    I'm still open to suggestions, eh...don't be a stranger, if you know something I might have missed. ;)

    So technically the above worked – I CAN use the Edimax EW-7611ULB combo bluetooth/wifi dongle after following the directions in that link I posted..

    ...but weird stuff is happening:

    1.) The keyboard (Rii mini, 2.4ghz dongle variety) is now ALWAYS player one. I mean ALWAYS. I unplug the keyboard, hit "A" on a hard-wired controller to start a game, and the keyboard is somehow still player 1 and I have to plug the keyboard back in in order to hit "Select + Start" to exit out of a game. Never had that happen before. Furthermore, my bluetooth controllers ALWAYS took priority (i.e. Player 1, then Player 2, etc) over hard-wired controllers no matter what port they were plugged into (don't play mutiplayer that often but I'm pretty sure that's how it always worked).

    2.) WiFi doesn't auto connect. When I go into WiFi setup it even gives me an IP address ending in 140 which totally looks like it's connected if it has an IP address...but it's not really connected (can't SSH or FTP in for example). When I click on connect to a wireless network, re-enter my same password, it then connects, but the IP address changes to end in 12 (which has also never happened since my router I believe always saves the same IP address for a specific dongle...which is how my FTP bookmarks never fail to work).

    3.) Since something is screwy, when I unplug the combo dongle, and (reboot) then plug back in the regular bluetooth dongle (which ALWAYS worked before - no special compiling of drivers needed) -- for the life of me I can't get my 8BitDo wireless controller to connect now (tried 2 different bluetooth controllers).

    @COLUMBOSCOAT Sorry have been very busy the past couple of days, haven't managed to get back on this until now. I think I've been mistaken in how I want it to work. I originally planned to allow games on the game cube, or just more demanding games in general, be able to work with RetroPie and I assumed the only way was through Moonlight but I've realised that I've done it all for steam and can't get the game cube one working and I can only seem to find tutorials with moonlight only being used to get steam games on the Pi. Is it still possible to use moonlight to help with the performance of games like Wind Waker etc on the gamecube or is that not possible or have I just gone the wrong way about this? Sorry I realise this topic/question has now gone away from it's roots and I do apologise for my illiterate skills with this.

    If anyone else has this issue, when booting up and remain in the "Welcome, no gamepads detected" I get constant 2.4MBps with absolutely no failure, found this by accident. In other menus I get from 0 to 1.0 with constant fails.
