I have a NesPi built up for my niece, which has some MAME games on it, but can't seem to get the controller setup. Watched a few vids online, and I think should be as simple as starting a game and hitting TAB on the keyboard, but I've tried all keyboard buttons and controller buttons and nothing happens. I eventually have to yank the power cord because start/select won't back out either.

Any ideas? is there a key combo I should be using instead of TAB? or a cfg file I should delete?

@throbinson https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first - how do you connect your controller and what's the emulator you're using for MAME, how did you built the system ?

It's a USB SNES controller, and the keyboard is a Rii wireless. Seems to work with NES, SNES, NeoGeo (about all I tested so far). Sega CD doesn't launch at all, but tackling that after MAME.

Not sure which emulator... expected to see a box come up, instead it has a 'press a button to enter setup' splash screen. "a" button doesn't work... neither the A-button or a button in general, except the spacebar, but doesn't look like the config screen expected for mapping keys.

This was a 'quick' build for my niece for xmas so, admit I grabbed a 16gb image online with attract mode because when I was trying to make a retropie image back in spring for myself, I never managed to get attract mode working or Mame, so not expecting to get too much support because of that. Just hoped for a point in the right direction. Like, how to check/switch emulator and if deleting a config file might reset Mame or something.

@throbinson Check if Hotkey+X (usually Select+X) brings up the RetroArch GUI, and you'll be able to see which emulator it uses. But I don't expect this to work, since RetroArch would carry out the controller config and you'd at least be able to exit.
Use the Runcommand launch menu - try again mashing A or B during launch using the controller buttons - and see which emulator is used, then try switching to a lr- emulator (lr-mame2003).

The default emulator for a system is configured in /opt/retropie/configs/<system_name>/emulators.cfg. Since you're running a MAME rom, the system might be arcade, or fba or whatever. Given the fact that you're running a 3rd party image, I'm not even sure you're using RetroPie at all, so the paths might be off.

Seems like RetroPie... I think the guy took it, added the rest to it and uploaded to share.

My arcade build got derailed temporarily, and was split between using a Pi or a PC based system... had lots done on it and files etc, but never got everything working quite right.

Niece was really interested in it though and likes the old NES/SNES games so, figured for Xmas I'd get one of those NesPi cases and a 16GB card and well, time's a factor so hoped the 16GB Mad Little Pixel image would be better than what I accomplished on my own, but, seems to be a pain in the @$$. :D

That said, attract mode works... though not sure I like it more than the standard RetroPie/ES screen. Has sound and video... but also lag and takes longer to scroll through stuff.

I'll give those a try when I get home. Hopefully a quick fix. :)
