Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (SNES)
Ice Climber (NES)The five games I'm randomly enjoying at the moment.

MechForce (Amiga) - When I had an Amiga I'd either be playing this or Pinball Fantasies AGA. The greatest Battletech game ever made. The lack of a definitive campaign is its only flaw.
Advance Wars (GBA) - Simple to learn but very difficult to puzzle your way through to the 'S' rank solutions. The War Room maps give hundreds of hours of gameplay.
Street Fighter II Champion Edition (Arcade) - I wasted much of my 20's and a lot of my money on this game.
Wizardry (Apple ][) One of the first turn based RPG dungeon crawl series ever, and still one of the most difficult.
Bubble Bobble (NES) Me and my wife would sit down with a giant bowl of popcorn and spend entire nights playing this completely through. A great partner game.

I thought it was time for an update in this thread. :)
1 Tetris (PSP). I recently discovered this game. Some time ago I was searching for the best Tetris game for Retropie, but missed this one. It is a game from the digital Mini's on the Playstation Network. I don't think you can even legally acquire it anymore (EA lost the Tetris rights). Aside from the lack of a 2 player option, this game has a lot going for it: Clean but nice crisp visuals, a great pumping soundtrack, several different modes of play, hard and soft drops, saving 1 block, looking 4 blocks ahead. The game runs great in PPSSPP.
2 Frogger (Arcade). Put this game on my Pi, mostly because of Seinfeld..but I actually enjoy it quite a lot. However I was disappointed to find out the game doesn't have initials for highscores (which the Seinfeld episode was based on).
3 Street fighter III second impact (Arcade). The fighter I always keep coming back to.
4 Mortal kombat trilogy (PS1). I don't know why but this games plays a lot faster than any arcade Mortal kombat. I like it though; it plays like a Mortal Kombat Turbo.
5 Final fantasy VII (PS1). I don't think I have to explain this one. :)

1.Super Mari 64 - Bot sure exactly why there is just something enjoyable. Finished it twice already.
2. Defender of the Crown AMIGA- A Cinemaware classic
3 Bubble Bobble ANIGA - How can you not love this
4. Burgertime MAME - Had this on Intellivision as a child ahh the memories.

Many years ago, I played it all the way through with a female friend at a LAN party at my home. Another friend of me complained because we blocked one of the PCs, and because he couldn't stand the ever-repeating music anymore. 😊

@Dwarfboysim At my last birthday party, the kids of my friends played Bubble Bobble with some of my other friends and with each other for quite some time on my DIY upright arcade cabinet. :)
I think it's a great kids game. Although you "kill" monsters, you do it in a cute, almost non-violent way.

f-zero x insainly fun with super ultimate mega fast mode
2049 sanfrancisco rush one of the best stunt racer games
n64 super smash bros (its super smash bros thats why its fun)
super mario RPG a great story line
Cave story (good music, good story, amazingly fun) -
- 1: Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter (FBA) One of my childhood arcade games and an all-time favorite. It brings childhood memories back..
- 2: Rampage (MAME) Fun multiplayer to play with friends and it's sequel is just as good. The Arcade version is the best version to experience the gameplay.
- 3: Joust (MAME) A classic 2 player fun. Just insert coin and play. It's simple as that. The sequel is good but not as great as the first one.
- 4: Bubble Bobble (NES) Cute gameplay. Simple platformer. This title is great for playing 2 player with female friends and works well for all ages.
- 5: Snow Bros. (NES) Alternative to Bubble Bobble and fun as well with bosses in the gameplay. An arcade version with a sequel does also exist and the arcade sequel can be played with 4 players.
There are many more favorites, but these are the ones that i play currently the most at this time.

I thought I'd update this thread as I've been playing a few different games these days. No special order.
- Strider 2 (PSX): this is a direct port of an arcade game, but since the arcade version doesn't run well on the Pi, the PSX version works wonders. Playing it as an arcade game (instead of a game one tries to finish, given the infinite continues) it ends up being quite fun, and a good action romp. I've been having quite a bit of fun with it.
- Castlevania, Rondo of Blood (PC Engine CD): I've had the translation for this game for quite a while but I never had the chance to play Castlevania until the past several years, though I never played it for long. I thought that it was probably time to play this now, and it is a great mix of classic Castlevania with modern (2D) graphics, animations, hidden paths and secrets. It's not an easy game, but it's one I end up going back to in the past few weeks.
- Ikaruga (Dreamcast): Once again, an arcade game whose arcade version doesn't run, but whose console port runs well. After the long back and forth on the Dreamcast thread to get this working properly, it's a great mix of a bullet-hell shooter and a puzzle game, thanks to the polarity mechanisms. Furthermore, the longer you've played the game for, the more continues the game grants you, which is a nice way to reward perseverance until you do end up finishing the game. I recommend it.
- Elevator Action Returns (AdvMAME): Fantastic sequel to Elevator Action. Great 2D graphics, animations and gameplay. A mix of Elevator Action and Rolling Thunder, it's just a joy to watch and play.
- Mr. Driller (PSX) - Another arcade game whose arcade version doesn't run, but whose console port runs well. Mostly to relax and have a bit of brainless, kid-friendly, fun. I kind of suck at it but every time I lose I always feel that I can do better.
These are the ones I'm playing these days, not suggesting they're the best games I have here but certainly the ones that have had the most airtime in the past few weeks.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PSX)- I never had a Playstation 1 (The N64 was the first console I ever bought myself.) so I missed out on some amazing titles. I'm playing this currently, and I just made it to the inverted castle. This has easily become one of my all time favorites now.

X-Men 2 Clone Wars (Sega Genesis)- Probably the most visually impressive Genesis game that I'm aware of. Great level design and character selection, too.

Sonic CD (Sega CD) - My all time favorite Sonic game. Great music, fun levels, interesting mechanics.

Robocop vs Terminator (Sega Genesis)- A ridiculously over the top gore fest. I love it.

Super Mario Brothers 3 (NES)- My all time favorite game. Great graphics for the NES, fun levels, love the suits Mario can get. Just a blast in every way.

I love that game, especially in co-op. I played it through with a friend last year. Is the AdvMAME (0.106) version any better than the mame2003(-plus, 0.78) version? I only know the latter.

@Clyde As far as I recall, lr-mame doesn't really run it full speed - nor any of the other Taito F3 games, just close (50-odd fps I believe). AdvMame runs it at full speed (as all the other games in that hardware).
I believe (thought I'd have to double check) that you can probably set it to double resolution and then use scanlines that look similar to the ones in lr-mame, if that's your thing, or just run it with normal resolution without scanlines.

I never played Cave story, but after having seen some gameplay I'm definitely adding it to my backlog. :-) It reminds me a bit of vvvvvv.
