Hello! Hoping I could get some pointers from someone who may have had this same issue. My raspberry pi 3 had worked perfectly since I built it; been probably 3 or 4 months. One day recently, I downloaded a few themes to check out, and afterward, upon browsing through my games, I realized my SNES box art and game info was gone. I know some themes are basic and do not show info and box art, so I switched between a bunch, and even checked the original Carbon theme, and the art is still missing. I didn’t think much of it. I can easily download that back sometime. It’s strange though. It only erased my SNES info. Anyway, I went to play some games, and sadly I cannot save anymore. Both in-game and save states stopped working. When I save in-game, it doesn’t actually remember that I saved it. I’ll come back to the game, and it’s as if I’m starting it up for the first time ever. No save files at all. And when I try to do a save state, it says “Task Failed: Save State.” Anyone ever had any issue like this, and if so, did you find a resolution?

Maybe your changes messed up your retroarch.cfg files. It might help if you give us your configuration for savestate_directory.

Can you run this and give us the output:
        cd /opt/retropie/configs
        grep -r 'savestate_directory' ./
