Hoto: use Gameshark cheats for the PSX

  • This might be something for the PSX Retropie Wiki/Docs.

I read on this weppage and this page about using 'ye olde Gameshark cheat codes in ePCSX. Here's how I got it to work in pcsx-rearmed (dunno if it works in lr-pcsx-rearmed too):

    1. Find a Gameshark code for your favorite game on the internet (example link).

    2. Create a text file that contains this cheat in the following format:

    [Unlock 2nd Zone]
    300A7E21 0001

    1. Doesn't really matter how you name this file nor where you place it on your Pi. Let's say you named like this: /home/pi/psxcheats/Omega_Boost.cht.

    2. Start the pcsx-rearmed emulator w/ said game and press Escape to show the menu. Now go to: Extra stuff --> Load pcsx cheats --> browse to your cheat file.

    3. It will say something like "2 cheats loaded" because the cheat file containes 2 lines (i.e. one remark and one actual cheat code).

    4. Go back one level in the menu. There will be a new menu item called "Cheats". Active said cheat.

    5. If you've gotten the cheat for exactly the right ROM (i.e. the US version and not the Japanese version) then it'll work.

Some say that if you name the cheat file the same as the cd-rom code for the game (i.e. something like SCUS-941.63.CHT) and place it in the proper dir then it's automatically recognized by pcsx.

Other than the layer of retroarch is there any differing formats in standalone compared to the method listed here?

The Gameshark codes must be in the cheat file as described above. So no lines like "cheats = 2 cheat0_desc =". That won't work. Maybe the method you referred to works in the libretro version of pcsx-rearmed. But that version won't run on my Pi 1 B+ (probably because the Pi 1 is too slow). :-)

  • I followed the instructions closely but when I bring up the emulator menu theres no directory called Extra Stuff. What am I missing or how can I fix this?

Are you sure you are using pcsx-rearmed and not lr-pcsx-rearmed? That last one is the default if I'm not mistaken. In pcsx-rearmed the menu opens when I press Escape on a keyboard. If it doesn't then you might be using the LibRetro version of PCSX (i.e. the mentioned lr-pcsx-rearmed). Confusing, isn't it?

    Good luck! :)
