audio issues with SNES in pi3

@matchaman so yeah..... overclocking has made NO change in this awful audio lag, crackle, stutter, my next guess is good it be the actual board itself???? even though its ONLY snes doing this to me? its really unplayble.... but yes i overclocked now at 1400 and RIGHT at start up snes has audio problems.. so heating is not the issue

That's strange. If it's so persistent, the first thing you should do is to try your card on another Pi. If you can't, you should do a fresh installation.

It's normal. Try lr-snes9x instead of lr-snes9x2010. The latest builds seem to be better optimized. However, they don't eliminate the sound clicks completely.

What did it for me was overclocking up to 1350MHz (combined with a fan) and I don't have to deal with it at all with my new Pi 3 B+. The 200Mhz boost completely eliminates all SNES slowdown issues.

I was disagreeing with you there, but I redid some tests and I don't notice the slowdowns I get anymore with my pi3b+ at 1500mhz. In my first tests, yoshi's island got horrendous slowdowns but now it's fullspeed. Not sure if that much difference was changed with the base retropie stretch image and a fully updated one.

@lovelorn88 Start over with the official retropie image. It's how I usually troubleshoot my problems, and slowly start changing stuff until my problems start. Don't alter a thing but controller settings and add yoshi's island to test in 2005/2010/snes9x and add a normal snes game like smw and test that too.

@darksavior alright... yeah im actually gonna go to the store in a bit and pick up another 64gb sd card and flash retropie on there and if it STILL acts up then it has to be the board itself ima throw starfox and yoshis island

@lovelorn88 Well, for me, I recently started over clean but only transferred my gamelist.xml and scraped images over. Before, I used to transfer everything in my configs folder, and that was causing pegasus, the frontend I'm using, to crash for some weird reason after exiting reicast. That's a learning experience for me.

@lovelorn88 I remember someone had issues with fx chip games too. i can't remember what it was exactly, but the common between these games is the fx chip. And there was a setting he just turned on or off in snes emulator and then it worked. It was about save states. Looks like fx chip games do a lot of problems. My Stunt Race FX menu is glitchy too.

@thelostsoul I dug out my pi3 and installed the retropie stretch image to another microsd. Fully updated, nothing touched but res to 1080p and setup wifi/pad, stock speeds trying yoshi's island:

lr-snes9x: It started out fullspeed in level 1-1 but it will have dips to 58fps and a bigger dip to 56fps in other sections where the audio will start to skip. Not sure if an overclock to 1300 might help. This pi no longer has any cooling so I'm not trying it:)

lr-snes9x-2010: Fullspeed in the sections where there was skipping in lr-snes9x.

I just tested Starfox and get crackling sound in intro of game and of first stage intro. Its just a little bit. One question, do you use audio from HDMI? I use the audio jack, because my monitor don't have built in speaker. Also, look at this site: https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Sound-Issues/

@darksavior ok.. heres the thing.. i just got back from the store with my NEW SanDisk 64gb class 10 sd card..... put retro pie on there and just a few snes games and the problem is STILL there....... audio cuts in and out, gets laggy, stutters not just FX games Batman returns for example does this to this is on a PI3 model B ....so i dont know, its not the tv because i even tried with headphones and the issue is still there..... lol wasted $30 hahaha damn...... only thing i could think now is my board is bad??? but then again it would only effect snes..... ill add the audio issues are not constant its random

@thelostsoul try Yoshis island and dont just wait 1 min its VERY random Batman Returns is another one that has lots of crackling oh and Demons Crest i dont have any of these problems with the snes mini on my HDTV and i use a soundbar.... but i have tested out the tv speakers and even plugged headphones into the pi itself.... sometimes the audio is worse then others

@thelostsoul Yes, I use hdmi only. I know the jack might cause some distortion, but I don't believe @lovelorn88 has this problem. The distortion would be nonstop.

@lovelorn88 You never said if you're using a 3rd party image or not. I don't believe the pi's broken. I still suggest you start over with the stretch image https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/16307/retropie-4-3-15-stretch-images-for-testing

@darksavior and what do you mean by a 3rd party image i went to retropies site.... downloaded retropie... flashed it to my sd card.... and just now throw a few snes games on it.... the audio stuttering is still present all my other systems on my pi run just fine though..... my only guess is now its the reaspberry pi i have its self but that doesnt explain why my other systems run great and not snes

I am running it currently. Everything seems perfect. Sorry, but I can't replicate your problem.
Btw, my Starfox problem is solved. I had to disable Rewind function and now the crackling is gone. Damn that function gave me a headache on Mame too... Never use Rewind!

Maybe there is something with timing issue with the tv or hdmi? Mind changing the HDMI cable? Or if you can, try a different tv. Maybe try audio jack (you have to tell RetroPie to use audio jack btw), just to eliminate these hardware problems and if it is emulation side. Maybe set on or off V-Sync. What else could it be?

Or the roms are bad. Try to get roms with exclamation mark [!] in filename, becaus those are generally good dumps.

@thelostsoul how many diferent tvs should i try? LOL and hmdis? LOL ive tried 2 different tvs and 2 different hdmis..... and like i said i EVEN redownloaded retropie on another SD..... only thing i didnt do was get A different pi.... are you using Pi3B??? doesnt make anysense why im the only one with this problem... yes yes yes... i tried different roms..... Ive spent HOOOUURRRSSS on this no joke.....

@thelostsoul a vew 32x games do this to... but its a bit different... sounds more of a glitchy sound Metal head on the sega 32x was one of them... but ive never played a 32x before nes is perfect... turbografx and the CD add-on run great hell even ps1 some games on the ps1 i can use the high res mode and it runs fine......

@lovelorn88 I'm about stumped. Only option left is to try another ac adapter. If yours has a switch on it, or if it's not 2.5a, it might be the cause. Phone chargers are not recommended and will cause voltage drops.
