Vertical screen non-shoot 'em ups.

@caver01 My highscore is a mere 98300, even though reached in only a handful of games after many decades. If I get near the scores of you both, I'll post them in your thread.
I didn't try TP84 yet, but I already marked it as a favourite for the near future. :)
-
@that’s fine by me. Anything with a bit of variation is good :-) I was really trying to find suggestions for things that aren’t just remakes of Space Invaders.

@markwkidd Alas, I can't test it on mame2003-plus because it fails to build in Retropie at the moment. :( I didn't have the time to try the workarounds suggested in the issue's comments, yet. I may do so this weekend.
I did today. This hotfix (comment #385853797 from grant2258) let me build mame2003-plus on Retropie 4.4. Since it includes overwriting the original
~/Retropie-Setup/scriptmodules/libretrocores/lr-mame2003-plus.sh
, you may want to make a backup of this file first:cp ~/Retropie-Setup/scriptmodules/libretrocores/lr-mame2003-plus.sh ~/Retropie-Setup/scriptmodules/libretrocores/lr-mame2003-plus.sh.backup
As for Spy Hunter, it works in mame2003-plus as well as in AdvanceMAME3 (I didn't test AdvanceMAME's other versions). So it remains the task to map SH's analog wheel controls to my digital joystick in a playable manner.

003-plu
spyhunter should be working in mame2003 as well the bally fixes where ported over there as well the vector games will work on mame2003 + and mame2003 if there is still issues with spy hunter on mame2003 let me know the input issues should be gone on both cores though. Well the gui displaying things when it shouldnt be

@grant2258 I updated mame2003 from source and the problem is gone. The only strange thing was that the dip switch for Service Mode was on from the start, but I could disable it via Mame's gui. Maybe the older version of mame2003 messed up the dip settings? Anyway, thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
-
@clyde said in Vertical screen non-shoot 'em ups.:
messed
yes the old version problems messed them settings up would probably be best to clear the directory in all honesty
-
@grant2258 Which directory?
-
@clyde your cfg director delete everything accept default.cfg that where the dip settings ect are stored
-
@grant2258 That would delete all configs I've saved so far. Since that struck me as a bit overkill, I checked the configs manually for noticeable problems. Only spyhunt.cfg has any settings other than some button assignments (which I recognized as mine in the other configs), so I'll only delete that one for now. But I know now where to look if any other game has messed-up settings, thanks!

They all spawn from default.cfg unless you have mapping done mapping for separate games you will be ok. Again its a personal thing we are doing some input changes to mame2003 plus at the moment its still very much a wip but @markwkidd and @dankcushions have made significant progress in going forward
-
@grant2258 Yes, I do have some custom mappings, that's why I wouldn't want to delete the whole directory without reason. <:)
Thanks for all your good work, fellas.

Oh wow this is a recent thread. Oddly enough I am doing the exact same thing. Building a dedicated vertical setup.
I came across a wonderful masterlist of all Vertical [edit] Classic Arcade games.
https://arcadecart.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/412-Vertical-Game-List1.pdf
[Edit2] What theme and/or Frontend are you using?
-
@deadstretch I don't have a final theme yet. I am just using the default, which doesn't fit properly, until I get the build finished in a month or so (hopefully). Then I am going to modify something to fit the 3:4 aspect ratio properly. I would like a splash screen that fits properly too. I am not that keen on some of the scraped images I have ended up with, so I wanted to look for some better images too. Preferably a consistent type, eg always flyers, or always screenshots of game in progress, and with a consistent aspect ration and size. I wanted to limit myself to a relatively small number of games, ie under 50, so manually customizing the metadata won't be too painful. I have too much scraped information in the vein of "this is a 36 year old arcade game...", which was already 2 years out of data on the day I scraped it that I want to change to something that doesn't get out of date, such as "This arcade game, released in 1982..."
-
Maybe its been mentioned but (although I guess its a shoot em up) Gun.Smoke!
-
@dipkid No, it wasn't mentioned. Thanks for the suggestion.
-
@deadstretch Vertipi is excellent for a vertical mame setup
-
@chizzer Yes, I had read that, but as I am not an expert, I wanted to get my bearings on retropie, especially because of the advice and support I can get on this forum. Once I get more familiar with Linux, python etc I will branch out
-
@chizzer @DeadStretch just know that Vertipie appears to be a third party image which is unsupported territory. It will be difficult/impossible to troubleshoot anything using that image (you would have to ask Freddy, its creator for help).
It would be better to look into the Attract Mode theme used and learn that configuration in the process.
-
@caver01 sounds like a good idea. Baby steps...
-
@chizzer Sorry. I don't use 3rd party RetroPie Images.
As for the topic in the thread, I've found out that Attract Mode has a few vertical themes/layouts.
Also the Pegesus frontend (found on these forums) looks like it will work great in vertical as well.
So that's what I'm going to be testing and messing around with the next few days.
Contributions to the project are always appreciated, so if you would like to support us with a donation you can do so here.
