From my understanding, lr-mame2003 is the defacto choice due to the limitations of the Pi HW. Is there any reason to run lr-mame2003 rather than lr-mame if running RP on a decent x86 platform?

I don't know which version lr-mame is, but each version have its own set of roms and are not always compatible. Besides this, I don't see any reason not to go with newest version of Mame. Newer means, more games supported, usually less bugs and better emulation. Performance differences shouldn't be an big issue on modern pc hardware.

Thank you @thelostsoul . That is the way I have been looking at it but want to hear what others have to say.

@johnodon On PC, whenever I setup and get the correct romset, I always try to get newest Mame version. I don't see any point going below, if compatibility with roms and input files isn't the reason. (Oh, you edited your posting. Now the question is gone. :D)

I am also curious if there is any other reason for older versions.

From what I read it was only because of the limitations of the Pi.

@johnodon Yeah, I was referring to pc.

On my overclocked Pi 3, I also use Mame2010. It is good enough to handle it. But that should not bother you. In fact, I have an third emulator for arcade games (fba), because there are a lot games working better. On PC, I just could use the newest version. But if your pc is a little bit old, then performance could still be a problem with some 3D titles.
