He'll get a slap on the wrist and carry on. Too many wankers trying to cash in on the nostalgia wagon.

@herb_fargus I'm not so sure about it about it. He was selling hardware with installed emulators, bundled with hundred of copyrighted games.

Seems he doesn't see that he did anything wrong or illegal, rather insulting his critics instead.

Other VT videos claim that his console may be just a re-branded Revo K101, which in contrast doesn't come with pre-installed roms or even game pictures, according to its How To Use page (and thus, these links shouldn't violate the forum rules, I hope).

Let's hope for him that he at least acquired the rights from Revo, although a lawsuit from them may be peanuts comparing to Nintendo.

All of his consoles are rebranding of existing products (I don't think he's actually developing new hardware), but I think this is legit, if you accept the fact that you are paying a double price just for a name stamped on the box.
The real issue here is that some of these consoles are being sold bundled with hundred of copyrighted games, not just Nintendo, but Sega, SNK, and many other arcade game developers.
As far as I know the only way this could be legal was for him to have an agreement with every single holder of the IP of these bundled games, and obtain their permission to sell their games (I think something like this happened for the C64 Mini).

I highly doubt that this happened. If even Nintendo itself have 20 to 30 games in its own console and Sony missing important titles as Gran Turismo, Wipeout and Crash Bandicoot, I doubt that this forgotten wannabe rapper got them all. I say the impossible: it is impossible!

I agree. That's why I think these consoles are illegal.

@mrnebu Selling some roms will not get you in prison. I just hope he pays for this act. On the other hand, in China (this was his source) its much much worse on a bigger scale.

The likelihood really depends on where you're charged, but intellectual property theft can indeed be a jail-able offense. It might not be especially fair, but sometimes a defendant's notoriety can play a part in the severity of sentencing in order to send a message to other offenders. Soulja Boy might be a small 'c' celebrity, but this story has already spread pretty far in the gaming community and many people are watching it closely, if for no other reason than amusement. A stiff sentence would definitely be remembered and talked about for some time.

The problem with a stiff sentence is that it could snowball into something that affects us all, especially in the emulation scene.
I worry that, Nintendo (for example), could be emboldened to pursue areas we all know it hates - Roms and Emulation, which is only a civil offense. Imagine if it was made a criminal offense ? Power and money, do talk the loudest.

Anything's possible. However, outside of setting a strong example here and there, I doubt they'd want to perpetually remain in court with what ultimately amounts to their user-base. The damage to public relations alone over time would likely be a deterrent. Now, if you're talking about taking action against larger operations that profit heavily off of their IPs, such as ROM sites, I'm sure that will continue to happen.

Maybe Sony will come to our aid if that happens, since they used an already existing emulator in their PSX Mini. :)

Ok, so "boss up" means "stop selling illegal console".

ROFL test out where souljagame.com leads to now. Hint, it was the name of the handheld Soulja Boy sold.
Edit: This year was crazy, where big companies failed and we got this Soulja Boy issue.

A bloke selling someone else's property for their own profit, doesn't seem entirely unreasonable that one could get into trouble for it.

That looks awful. And the lag, even in the menus, is just nuts. What a waste of $100, let alone the $30-£40 you can get it from import.
