PSX games load to black screen, then back to menu. Deleting retorach.cfg allows game(s) to launch ONCE

Log found in /dev/shm/runcommand.log: https://pastebin.com/vdmesyDB
Emulator: lr-pcsx-rearmedHow to replicate the problem:
I recently updated the entire system. Previously, everything worked fine. Afterward, everything worked fine EXCEPT for PSX emulation via 'lr-pcsx-rearmed'.
The problem is that all PSC games will not start. I get a black screen, and then I'm booted back to the menu. The most interesting thing I've found is that if I delete the 'retroarch.cfg' in '/opt/retorpie/config/psx', all the games will load and I am able to change all the retroarch settings to my liking. However, this only works ONE TIME. As soon as I relaunch a game, I see the same black screen, boot to menu behavior.
In other words, the only way I can get a PSX game to load is if I delete '/opt/retropie/config/psx/retroarch.cfg'
I have attached my '/dev/shm/runcommand.log' via pastebin. However, it doesn't really indicate where the problem is--at least not to me.
I'd appreciate any help or advice on this topic. I'm sure I'm missing something fundamental, but I just don't know what, yet.
Regards.

To get more info in the log, you should enable Verbose logging from the Runcommand launch menu.
From the log you posted, I see you have a bunch of configuration overrides defined:
[INFO] [overrides] core-specific overrides found at /home/pi/.config/retroarch/config/PCSX-ReARMed/PCSX-ReARMed.cfg. [INFO] [overrides] no content-dir-specific overrides found at /home/pi/.config/retroarch/config/PCSX-ReARMed/psx.cfg. [INFO] [overrides] game-specific overrides found at /home/pi/.config/retroarch/config/PCSX-ReARMed/Resident Evil - Director's Cut (USA).cfg. -[INFO] [overrides] game-specific overrides stacking on top of previous overrides [INFO] Config: appending config "/home/pi/.config/retroarch/config/PCSX-ReARMed/PCSX-ReARMed.cfg" -[INFO] Config: appending config "/home/pi/.config/retroarch/config/PCSX-ReARMed/Resident Evil - Director's Cut (USA).cfg"
The image from the RetroPie site doesn't have any overrides, nor video loading screens added - did you add these yourself ?

@mitu I believe the paste-bin of the runcommand log is verbose, however, I will attempt again this evening.
The core overrides must have been added by me when trying to solve this issue. I was convinced that the issue was caused by a retroarch.cfg setting, so I tried several changes. I confess, some things I didn't fully understand the implications of doing.
The loading screens were definitely added by me. I had everything just how I liked it, then updated from 4.4.1 to 4.4.12. 🙂 Oh well.
Thanks for your time.

deleting the retropie.cfg has an unwanted side-effect; next time you launch that emulator, retroarch will generate the file, but retroarch's defaults are quite different from retropie's defaults and can break things.
so to get back to stock functionality, you need to delete ALL the overrides listed above, AND the retroarch.cfg file, and then immediately reinstall lr-pcsx_rearmed via retropie-setup (this will generate a retroarch.cfg with the stock settings if it sees that none exists).
obviously back up everything beforehand :)

@dankcushions Thank you for the reply. I figured it was something like that.
What is the best way to delete all core overrides at once? Using the retoarch menu or by deleting a specific config file?
Thanks for your help.
