FPS Drops while emulating Master System on 3B+
-
Hi,
First and foremost
Pi Model or other hardware: 3B+
Power Supply used: Stock
RetroPie Version Used (eg 3.6, 3.8.1, 4.1 - do not write latest): 4.5.1
Built From: Pre made SD Image
USB Devices connected: PS4 controller V2
Controller used: PS4 controller V2
Error messages received: none
Log found in /dev/shm/runcommand.log (if relevant): /
Emulator: lr-genesis-plus-gx / lr-picodrive
Attachment of config files: /
How to replicate the problem: /I just got my 3B+. Installed retropie right away and decided to start with Sega Master System emulation. I noticed some FPS drops when playing Astérix (when destroying blocks). I then played Sonic the Hedgehog. I tried both cores (picodrive and genesis plus gx), picodrive gets less FPS drops but sound is choppy and with genesis plus gx, the second level is literally unplayable.
I've tried on both a Full HD and 4K monitor.I'm hoping I'm doing something wrong because it would be a real bummer if the most powerful pi couldn't handle Master System emulation.
Thanks in advance!

@Biquet hi...
I cant reproduce your problem, but you can try this:https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/Speed-Issues
-
I don't think a 3b+ is powerful enough to drive a 4k display - but 1080p should be easily handled without slowdowns by a Pi 3B+.
Can you get a detailed log from running the game by enabling verbose logging from the Runcommand launch menu and then uploading the log file (/dev/shm/runcommand.log
) to pastebin.com ? -
@Biquet premade SD? As in bought online?
-
@thestarglider A standard Samsung SD.
-
@mitu Will do as soon as I'm home again.
-
@mitu Sorry for the late answer.
No runcommand.log gets created when I launch with verbose (which your link doesn't explain btw). Looked in \retropie\configs\all\emulationstation\tmp because can't find the /dev folder your talking about.
Thanks for taking the time to help btw.

You need SSH access to the system to get the
/dev/shm/runcommand.log
file, because it's not available through file shares.
As for enabling Verbose mode, it's right there in the Runcommand launch menu - you can't miss it. -
@mitu Om I found the verbose launching option. The SSH part is the problem. I'll update whenever I can (probably weekend).
Thank you

It's been a while.
I've added the ssh folder in the boot folder of the microSD (could only access that folder?), as explained. I've run the game with verbose logging. Can't seem to find that /dev/ folder anywhere.
I'm sorry.
-
@Biquet Did you install WinSCP and logged in via SSH on the PI ? The folder is accessible only if you login that way.
-
Oh, no I didn't.
Will try the next time.
Thanks for sticking with me.

Another question: Once I've done that. Where would I be able to access said folder?
-
Ok found it.
This is the log of Asterix. I have problems with Sonic too. Do I need to upload a log for that one too?
Alex Kidd in Miracle World, the Lion King, Daffy Duck in Hollywood all run fine.

[INFO] Threaded video stats: Frames pushed: 10061, Frames dropped: 1.
that implies full speed to me. are you sure this isn't accurate emulation? a lot of games had slowdown on real hardware. you could use youtube to verify.

Yeah. I guess you're right.
