Hi, I'm trying to make a portable retropie gaming console. It's my first project so I don't really know what I'm doing, and I'm trying to wire up individual buttons, instead of an entire controller. One d-pad, one joystick, 4 face buttons, 2 shoulder buttons, and start and select. I have the code, I just don't know if this is possible though, and if it is I don't know which pins to use, and if it isn't, what is the maximum I can use. Thanks.

Take a look at https://github.com/recalbox/mk_arcade_joystick_rpi, it's similar to what you have in mind and it's already included in RetroPie.
