I have a 9 pin to usb adaptor . I can connect and use my Sega genesis controller to retropie with no problem. and since atari 2600 controller has the same 9pin output and works with the adaptor (I can map directions and the single button) I was wondering if there is anyway to map only one button controller on retropie. and map other buttons that are on the console, to keyboard or second controller? I am not sure but I think using second controller for start , select button is out of option. I couldnt get it to work . is there any way around it.
Iam sure some one thought about this before and hopfully came up with a solution : )

Do you want to use the controller in-game or to navigate the front-end (EmulationStation) ? If you want to use it for Atari games, I think the atari800 standalone emulator may support it.
You can configure it manually, since you won't be able to map it through EmulationStation, but using it standalone would be cumbersome (i.e. no back button in ES or the ability to exit any RetroArch core).

Thanks for replying. yes I only want to play games with it. I did manage to config it thru emulationstation. I can easily navigate through games, and emulators, and use the only button to lauch games. the only problem is: the start button , to start the game . once the game is started you good to go. you can use it as a second controller since player 1 starts the game . but to use it as 1st controller I couldnt find a solution. (this was on Ir-stella btw).
I cant see how atari800 be any different , as you still need one more button to map it to start button.
maybe the only option is those 3rd party Atari joystick that has 2 more buttons.

The Atari 2600 system used at least two if not three buttons for games. Atari just put the other "inputs" on the console. You couldn't actually start a game with the controller on the original hardware.

@iandaemon Yes Iam aware of that. I own one. and if this is going to be difficult to set up I ll stick to playing on the original hardware . I just need an everdrive :) I think there is no point in playing Atari2600 with anything other than the Atari joystick.

@amook11 I still have my original Atari 2600 although the joysticks bit the dust decades ago. You can actually plug a Sega Genesis controller into the Atari 2600 and use it instead. The connector and pins are the same. (The games only recognize one button of course.)

@iandaemon one option might be to use one of these atari flashback joysticks. Haven't tested myself but it supports the extra buttons youd need
