Hello. I have been working for several hours / days to make MAME work. Want to play Super Qix! Have found collected BIOS files, tried to put the game in different folders (Arcade, fba, mame-liberto and mame-mame4all) . The game comes up but does not want to load / start properly. Is there no one who has simpler answers or possibly a video that can show from A to B on how to set up MAME games with BIOS and everything?

What romset version do you have? Have you read all of https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Arcade/#overview?

I don't have that one but from a quick search, I would recommend first trying romset v0.78 in MAME2003 and if that doesn't work, look for a v0.139 and load it up in MAME2010.

Super Qix isn't in 0.78. It wasn't added until 0.84. mame2010 will be the minimum option and you'll need the matching romset for that version.

Ah, guess I should have done a more thorough search. I was going off of this page which says it's been in MAME since version 0.031.

Edit: there's one labeled "bl" (bootleg?) in the 2003 set.

Only the bootleg version of Super Qix will work in MAME78.........

                GAMEX(1987, superqix, 0, superqix, superqix, 0, ROT90, "Taito", "Super Qix", GAME_NOT_WORKING )
GAME( 1987, sqixbl, superqix, superqix, superqix, 0, ROT90, "bootleg", "Super Qix (bootleg)" )

I dont wanna finger wag here but this is a classic case of why you shouldn't turn off the warning screens as it
would have told you the parent set doesn't work, BTW there are quite a few other games like this in MAME2003

@blackshadow13 forget checking. it's trivial to acquire the correct romset so just get that for mame2010 or whatever later supported MAME emulator you choose to use (or use the bootleg version from MAME 0.78 in lr-mame2003, which is what i would recommend since it's one of our recommended arcade emulators).

The proper answer is to build your own romset using clrmamepro using roms that you legally aquired . Googling "clrmamepro mame2003 romset" will likely yield a good tutorial.

However, some users just search the web for a complete mame2003 romset and are satisfied with that. This is not a legal way to acquire the roms and is not recommended or encouraged.

This is a mame2003 compatibility list, an on going work in progress, but will give you a decent idea of what does or doesn't work. https://buildbot.libretro.com/compatibility_lists/cores/mame2003/mame2003.html

@blackshadow13 The problem with people being hush hush about mentioning roms is that people will stumble upon bad roms, espically for mame where you don't know what mame version they are for. Reddit has a rom channel for it if you need info. You did not mention what hardware you are using.
If its the RPI4 maybe try 2010 MAME sets. I tried 2015 but some games are not fully playable or working.

Deathsmiles for example runs a little slow. If MAME is too confusing for you then give Final Burn Neo/FBA a try. I run some MAME,FBA, and Neo Geo AES on my RPI4.

Edit: Maybe ETA Prime has some tutorials on YouTube, If not check out Odysee .

@blackshadow13 Did that video tutorial help?

I can recommend some some games:
                              Metal Slug series (1,2,X,3,4,5)
Demon Front (Metal slug like gameplay)
Cyberbots (Mecha fighter game with some anime like characters [cameo in Marvel vs Capcom])
                              Asura Blade (Fighting 1vs1)

I recommend the Neo Geo AES versions since you gain the option to set as arcade or console version.
The Last Blade (Fighting 1vs1 Edo era setting)
Samurai Shodown (Fighting 1vs1 Edo era setting) [Also known as Samurai Spirits in Japan)

Wasn't one of the mechs from the classic "beat 'em up" Armored Warriors?

@iandaemon Thank you I couldn't remember that one on the top of my head. As for Cyberbots that one chick Devilot (Mid Boss) and that male fighter are in one of the Capcom Vs Marvel games. Yeah Armored Warriors I've seen mentioned, I was not sure if it was a sequeal or spin-off.

SonSon is from another arcade classic and she ended up getting a character redesign as a female in Marvel Vs Capcom.

@BlackShadow13 Were you thinking of getting any arcade game pads for your MAME setup? The only ones I know of is the Hori fighting stick MINI (Switch Version) and the 8BitDo Arcade Stick.

FBNeo games: Darkstalker series, that one fighting game with the busty semen demon. It also goes by "Vampire Savior" and "Vampire Hunter" (dstlku.zip, vsav.zip, vhunt2.zip)

@emulatre71 SonSon is actually a good game. It's not complicated; it's a good "old school" arcade game. The character in the original arcade game is a male. The character in MvC is a daughter or granddaughter I think. Huh, I learn something new every day.

                                    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SonSon

"In Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes there is a character named SonSon, who is the granddaughter of the main character of the same name."

Hi. No I didn’t look at the video. I tried the mame2015 instantly after the installation 😅. If it didn’t work then I had planned to watch the video.

And thanks for the game suggestions. Now I need to find them and try it out.
I do have a arcade stick for Fighting games (subsonic pro fight stick) that I have also used for some retro games. 😁

@blackshadow13 Apart from samples for some games, there's also those that have CHD files for them. I saw a set and it was huge and well over 120 GB. If you do have to get a set i recommend a macchanger and VPN for pc anonymity. You know because Nintendo has been harming emulation and is trying to label it as piracy.
