I just migrated from a Pi 3B to a Pi 4. On the 3B, whenever I started a game in a MAME emulator (any of them), the aspect ratio was automatically correct, including when starting vertical games like Pac-Man. However, now on the Pi 4, this is not happening. Vertical games are in landscape mode when I start them so they are all squashed. I never had to set the aspect ratio for each and every ROM, so I'm guessing I migrated (or didn't migrate) a setting from the 3B that sets the aspect ratio automatically, but I can't figure it out.

      I usually use lr-mame2003-plus.

Any ideas on what setting to check?

It's amazing how I always figure things out after I post!

        I found this thread:
        https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/14276/original-resolution-aspect-for-each-game/2

I set the Retroarch video output scaling to "Core provided", which it wasn't for some reason. Unlike that thread, I left integer scale turned off so that the image, whether vertical or landscape, reaches the edge of my Arcade1Up 17" screen (original Street Fighter II cabinet).

Now because I can't leave anything alone, maybe I need to see if I can add bezels!

Just be aware that not enabling integer scaling is not recommended because it will cause gfx issues due to bad nearest rounding, those gfx issues being more or less noticeable depending on the context.

Great. I did not know that. Thank you for the heads up!
