    PC Engine - US Games Loading to Black Screen

      Built From: retropie-buster-4.7.1-rpi2_3.img
      USB Devices connected: none
      Controller used: DS4
      Error messages received: none [black screen]
      Verbose log (if relevant): in-thread
      Guide used: n/a
      File: any US-based pc engine rom (ie Blazing_Lazers_(U).pce)
      Emulator: lr-beetle-pce-fast, lr-beetle-supergrafx
      Attachment of config files: n/a

      I’m finding that all pce roms that are Japanese (ie have (J) in the rom name, like “Benkei_Gaiden_(J).pce”, play just fine. However, whenever I try running a game with a (U) in the name (like “Blazing_Lazers_(U).pce”) the game loads into a black screen. This happens for both emulators.

      This does not freeze the system -- I can exit out of the game using hotkeys. It just loads a black screen and the game never starts.

            I see you're auto-loading/saving the state for the ROM, could be that it's a corrupted save state ? Can you try renaming/removing the auto-save file and see if the game starts correctly ?

              @mitu tried removing the save states. Still seeing nothing but a black screen. Here's the log:

                could be the cheat files corrupting the memory. try removing (you'll have to simultaneously remove your save state as well - to be honest i would disable the auto saving/loading whilst you're diagnosing this)

                also remove the srm internal save file '/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/pcengine/Blazing_Lazers_(U).srm'

                  I used to have this problem with several of my TG16 games. The way I fixed it was by downloading the Ootake emulator on my PC, and using it to open all of the games that gave me a black screen.

                  I can't remember the details exactly because I did this quite a while back, but Ootake will display a message about there being issues with the rom you tried to open, and it will give you the option to save a "fixed' copy of the rom. This fixed copy should work on your Pi without giving a black screen... or at least that's how it worked for me.

                    @vic-viper-001 yeah something was wrong with those roms. I found a new romset and they seem to work fine.

                    @dankcushions @mitu So a followup question: is there a low-impact way to swap the new roms for the old ones but keep the metadata?

                    Or will I have to run the full scrape from scratch?

                      Just use the same file name/overwrite the ROMs and it should be fine.

                        @mitu some of the filenames are just a little different, ie instead of blazerlazer (U) it says blazerlazer (USA). Will I have to overwrite all of these one by one?
