Debian Buster X86 install unresponsive mouse and keyboard during Config
-
Alright so let me give a run down of the specs and what's installed on the system. I'm setting up a lattepanda delta x86 as a retropie box and started out with a base image of 32 bit debian buster (10.11.0). I had tried ubuntu(LTS 20.04 amd 64) earlier in the week but ran into conflicts on being on 64 bit instead of 32 not wanting to be on (LTS 16.04 32/64 bit i tried both running into other snags) I chose the latter. The debian install is a minimum install with openSSH , xorg , samba , and retropie (4.8) along with other base system utils (I did not want a desktop environment as I want to replicate my experience on a pi with similar form factor and more muscle ). I also installed sudo and ifconfig as I find those tools useful. But I got everything running and emulation station does boot up although there's a catch. Upon booting and being greeted by the gamepad configuration screen I'm not able to configure inputs. If I boot with a controller plugged in it does recognize that a gamepad is available. If I reboot the system with it unplugged it reports back no gamepad available. (Disclaimer keyboard is plugged in the entire time). I also noticed that I am not able to f4 back to the cli after hitting the configuration screen. I'm not sure if the system is hanging or if it is just not recognizing input at that point anymore. Any help would be appreciated still fairly new to all of this but couldn't find many similar threads to this problem. RetroPie version is the latest at version 4.8 with the last commit at time of writing 4 days ago. Thanks guys!
Post note I tried multiple different controllers from ps3 xbox one and ps4 wired and wireless with the same results. All drivers were installed from RetroPi Setup.

On a PC, you need a desktop environment - even a minimal one.
Install something like OpenBox/XFCE and start EmulationStation from the RetroPie shortcut. -
@mitu is there any reason for that I wanted to as closely as possible mimic the experience on a raspberry pi. Why does it need a minimal desktop environment are there some packages Im missing that prohibit launching from the cli? its just weird to me that it boots and displays fine but wont take any input.

It's not weird, if you're using the X11 input driver, then a window manager is needed to properly handle some events. My guess is that, because you're missing a window manager, the ES window is not focused and not receiving input events.

@mitu gotcha gotcha well I caved and ended up installing XFCE and it is indeed working fine now. Thank you! Although having issues with PCSX2 configuration. Installed from the experimental packages section and am running into errors. I placed roms and bios in their respective directories. This error was logged to the error file.
Executing: /usr/games/pcsx2 "/home/rocco/RetroPie/roms/ps2/God of War (USA).iso" --windowed /opt/retropie/supplementary/runcommand/runcommand.sh: line 1304: /usr/games/pcsx2: No such file or directory
Through some googling I found out that means the emulator itself is missing but reinstalling leads to the same error. Any other troubleshooting or install recommendations?

That means
pcsx2
didn't install properly. Try re-installing and then look in the last log file under$HOME/RetroPie-Setup/logs
to see if there are any errors related to the installation.
