      Hello all,

      I have a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B
      Running latest version of RetroPie
Official Pi power supply 5V 2.5A
Built from the pre made SD image on Retropie website
      Plugged into the USB is:
Powered USB Hub which the following are connected to:

      • ipac2 for my arcade controls
      • External USB Sound Card usb to 3.5mm adapter (to connect the amplifier and speakers to the pi)

The powered USB Hub is being used as Ive had a long running issue where my sound cuts out mid game. Many users on the forums recommended a powered hub to maybe help solve this issue - Unfortunately the problem is still happening even after rigging up this new powered hub... I am at a loss :(

My original post for this problem was a LONG time ago so I dont know if there are any developments to help with this issue? Also Im not the most savvy/tech Retropie user so I cant recall all the tweaks I made to allow my sound to operate as it does..

If anyone could please assist me in trying to sort this issue out Id be eternally grateful. I have an arcade cab I put together myself so all I am playing is a selection of games from the Mame 0.78 romset. My cab would be perfect if I just didn't have this issue with the sound!

Many thanks in advance for any help on this issue :)

@jamietuley did you set the audio to 3.5mm on the Pi through the RetroPie option menu? If not, try that. I've had issues with certain TVs with HDMI sound output, but once I used external speakers. And forced the 3.5mm option, it cleared the issue.

For an arcade cabinet, I would go with a small powered amp using the 3.5 jack. Then hook all speakers into the amp. I did this with my Gorf cabinet, but I also used an old Kiosk W10 PC. Regardless, the amp would work the same for you. I'm not sure how reliable a powered USB port is for sound.

@jamrom2 Thankyou for your help on this...

I tried to get on the Retropie menu to adjust my sound settings but the onboard sound was disabled. I then remembered what I did quite a while back to remedy hissing sound when I used the 3.5mm jack:

          08aecf34-425e-4abf-9fe9-e719cc53b25e-image.png

So I assume I need to go back to the config file and do some more tinkering. Before this I really want to flash my SD image incase I mess up (very likely!).

Saying all this though, if I go back to the 3.5mm option for sound Im just going to get the hissing issues again!

Do you know if theres a way to get a readout of how all my audio is setup? Im such a novice with all this it would be good to have some info to show you guys on these forums to get to the root of the problem.

          Cheers,
          Jamie

@jamietuley my first question is if this a RetroPie build image or did this come from something else. Honestly, hissing is something I've never had an issue with with any of the 4 Pi3bs I own, nor was it a problem with my Pi2 before.

I don't know why you would have needed to alter any config file for the sound. It's better not to play around with any of the base configs and just use the menu to turn things on and off. You can try the Raspi-config menu and see if anything regarding sound is not active. But I think the Audio selection in the RetroPie setup does the same.

Anything above that is above my skill level. I've not experienced the issue you're having, nor did I have to play around with the config file to get anything to work. I used the menus only.

            Sorry
