I am having issue getting metal slug 1 and 4 to run on the neo geo and setting up the inputs for the ps2 controller to work with the neo geo also.

I have the bios loaded for the neo geo i have got the inputs for the snes controller working with it. When i load up metal slug 1 it gets the insert coins screen then i do that and press start then the game loads but the screen goes gray and only shows the health meters and the flashing go. What am i missing to finish this setup to get it to work? I tried metal slug 4 and only got a the options menu to flash for a nano second and that it after that it crashes every time or freezes on a black screen. Is there certain optimizations in need to do to get his to work right?

Which emulator are you using? They all work on lr-fba-next

@purehippo You will be using either the wrong version of neogeo.zip and/or the wrong romset for the emulator that you are choosing. Check this page:
              https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Setup/wiki/Neo-Geo

I use lr-fba-next for all neo-geo games but you must have the correct version of the roms.

With the correct files, they just work. No optimizations to do. Try MAME4ALL - you can run Metal Slug 1 and 2 on that as a test. You will need the 0.37b5 rom set for this.

@rbaker How can i tell if i have the correct neogeo.zip? Also how do i tell if the roms are correct? Do i need the UNIBIOS for lr-fba-next to work right? I dont believe i have gotten this file.

There is no way to tell from a single file in my experience, you are in trial and error mode. It's best to locate and download a full set from one of the many sources out there on the web and start from there. A full set could be anywhere from 2GB to 50GB depending on the version. Best get a 0.78 set to begin with as that will work with lr-mame-2003
