Trackball with Retropie

I have tried multiple things to get a generic PS2 (to USB) trackball to work with the Pi. I have used both Damaso and Wolfanoz images. It doesnt work straight in Android and doesnt work in the emulators. I assume these should be native with just the PS2 to USB dongle.
I have tried it even to a PC and it doesnt do anything. Are there arcade trackball types that require the other inputs (for buttons)?
