Curious if it's pi Bluetooth causing the issue

No additional Bluetooth software was installed, but I did disable the on-board Bluetooth by adding dtoverlay=pi3-disable-bt to the config.txt. You need to then pair up all your controllers again with the dongle plugged in.

I could be wrong, but it certainly seems to be an issue with the on-board Bluetooth. I also noticed the problem occurs predominantly in ES, and when I used a theme with videos in it, the problem became 10x worse! Might all be coincidental, but that's what I experienced.

This is definitely caused by the Pi's BT controller, I added a small BT dongle and disabled the internal BT controller and all problems disappeared. As an added bonus, the controller is MUCH more responsive than it was on the internal controller which makes finicky platformers playable.

What Bluetooth dongle did u use? I like the idea of a more responsive controller :)

@Fish17 I used this one, only 8€ and works out of the box. Just un-pair the controllers, add dtoverlay=pi3-disable-bt to config.txt, reboot pi, plug in dongle, re-pair the controllers like you did with the internal BT and you're done.

I was using Retropie 3.7 for a long time and it was perfect with the Wii U Pro controllers. The ghost button presses started when I recently downloaded the official 4.3 image. I like the new features in 4.3 but I still had an image of my 3.7 install and went back to that.

I am not going to purchase a Bluetooth adapter because of a software issue. It apparently isn’t being talked about anymore so I doubt it will be fixed.

Did anyone have any luck without buying an adapter? Or is everyone just dealing with the problem as I have been for the past couple months?

If so, your only options are buying an adapter or live with the ghost button presses. I can only say that I don't regret buying my adapter and being free of ghosts ever since. \o/

One advantage is that I can connect the Controllers to my bt-less PC if I want to. But that option might not interest you.

@clyde that’s not my only option, I went back to RetroPie 3.7

It’s just disappointing that this isn’t working properly in newer versions

if the issue is with the pi's onboard bluetooth, then the only people who could fix it are those supporting the linux drivers/firmware, not retropie.

This thread seems to suggest that some controllers don't filter their signals sufficiently and the Pi doesn't do that either. USB and wireless adapters tend to filter these micro signals, thereby fixing the problem, as does adding capacitors to the faulty controllers (final confirmation).

The question is, can it be considered an error on the part of the Pi that it's "too sensitive", if the actual fault lies with the controllers.
