Running ROMs from USB drive on Retrosmc?

So I am running Retrosmc and I purchased a 128GB USB drive to move my ROMs over. I read the guide for setting up this and tried the automatic method of formatting to FAT32 and creating a folder called retropie-mount and enabling the USB transfer service. None of this worked.
I then tried the manual method by moving the contents of home/osmc/retropie over to my usb drive. Whenever I tried this though emulation station would no longer load from inside OSMC.
I'm not sure what to do now but I am assuming that the problem arises from the fact that the home/pi/retropie folder is changed in Retrosmc to home/osmc/retropie, although I'm not entirely sure if thats the problem or not.
I would appreciate any guidance on the matter.
Edit* by running sudo bash RetroPie/scripts/./retropie.sh I was able to get into emulation station but it is still not launching from OSMC. The RetroPie button within OSMC activates System.Exec(/home/osmc/RetroPie/scripts/retropie.sh) which I thought would do the same as what I had just done over SSH but apparently this script isn't working within OSMC for some reason. Could this be a permissions problem?
I've just tested the USB by moving a ROM over to it and loading emulation station by running sudo bash ./retropie.sh over SSH and the game was there and played fine, so it just seems to be a case of getting the RetroPie launcher to load emulation station.

@dankcushions Sorry, it is 4.1.10 running on a Raspberry Pi 3.

@kiliimanjaro likely your issue has to do with running retrosmc as I've tested the automatic method on a fresh SD image and it works fine. You'll probably have to go through manual route

@herb_fargus As posted above, I had tried both the automatic and manual methods with neither of them working. I managed to get it sorted out now though because it seemed like there was a permissions issue that would not allow me to run the RetroPie script from the USB pen from within OSMC.
I ended up keeping all data and scripts on the SD card and mounting the roms folder to the USB drive and having it work that way.
