Thank you for all your help with this! Turns out all I needed was a new SD card, and RetroPie now works fine on my Pi Zero.

@GreenHawk84 I had this same issue. followed this post to resolve it Can't manage to configure Dreamcast controls.
read the second post, i found it to be very helpful.

if you have newer versions of retropie also place them in the /opt/retropie/emulators/reicast folder. they removed the shortcuts in the newer versions. i have no clue why. also needing to configure a controller may be an issue.

@Zigurana Do you have any future plans to put a "Deadsimple" mode? What deadsimple mode is that you absolutely will have no settings other than "shutdown system". That would be dreams come true. A machine that you turn it on, play your games and shut it down. No favorites, no anything. Like a close box. Like apple. Simple yet to the point. Thanks.

Q-Bert couldn't have said it better. I'm glad to see this resolved. A while back, I was helping someone out with a similar issue for launching DOOM wads from ES and I believe this might have been the same problem. I'll have to track that post down & point it back here for reference.

Ah! So my borders on the top were actually overscan issues. My screen has some specific values I needed to set. They are right where I need them to be now, so the issue may now be related to aspect ratio. I'll poke around a bit more.

Thanks, it seems to have helped a lot. Sometimes things can fuzz a little, but not nearly as bad. The other emulators don't seem to do as well either.

@jazzyninja you can delete roms within emulationstation (within edit metadata i think). not recommended in mame, as you can only safely delete clone roms, unless you have non-merged set.

there are a number of pre-built sets that remove clones, or you can make them yourself :)

I've read that link prior to posting here. The only thing that gave me pause this time is the mention of a "ROM header". I think what's wrong is that the NES zip files contain a number of ROMs per zip. I'll have to unpack a handful and see if that's where I went wrong.

Probably unlikely though and if it did run I doubt it would have decent performance
