FBA vs. MAME

@barbudreadmon I have given the FBA version of Gyruss some more time now, and I have found the following differences between MAME and FBA:

The sound effects, mainly the music is higher paced in MAME2003, making FBA sound slow. But is FBA closest to the original?
I will definitely say that comparing to the sound in the videos below, MAME2003 comes closest!

The FBA version apparently doesn't save highscores?

The spawning sound in FBA still sounds fuzzy to me.

The difficulty level is much higher in FBA.

The stereo separation in MAME is weird - I guess this is the work that's been done with the balance in FBA?

I have only played gyruss.zip. Do you know what's done in gyrussce. zip ? Any more Gyruss info to be found somewhere? Love this game!

Can anyone test if they have sound samples working in mario.zip (Mario Bros) on FBA?

I can only get them to work in MAME2003 (music and all)- but only running sounds on FBA.
I have samples from the romset placed in home/pi/RetroPie/BIOS/fba, but still no luck.

@andershp huh. I play that game every now and then on MAME. What are the samples supposed to do there? What sounds are you missing on FBA?

The music in fba and recent mame is supposed to be properly paced, the music in mame2003 is supposed to be wrongly paced.
Looks to me like the pace in your second video is faster than in the first one, i'm wondering how it was recorded, the first one seems more legit to me.
Hiscores in gyruss are not working properly, which is weird (they are implemented), i'll look into it.
I don't think anything specific was done to the gyruss clones.
The samples in mario are not complete in current fba release, but iirc the sound chip is fully supported in the next release.

I was reccemended mame 2003. which is weird for me isn't that very old, should I change to 2010 in my next time I feel like redoing everything. ANyways I got the rom pack for mame 2003 seems to run alright i mainly play shootemups. I have some games for FBA like demon front and street fighter 3 and noticed there is a option in the settings to apply a accuracy mode. But to play neo geo propally I had to overclock it a quite a bit and the more demanding games is kinda laggy. It seems there is very little button delay in that accuracy mode which im going for. Maybe ill get better luck with the pi 3+. But im waiting a bit longer to see a install retropi that is ready from the site.

@deltax5 Something is wrong with your setup. Neogeo games run full-speed on my overclocked pi2 in fba.

Super kaneko games runs choppy in FBA. Games like cyvern.zip run better in mame2003.

@deltax5 Yes, Darksavior is right, something with your setup is not right. You should have no need for overclocking, if you play Neo Geo games with FBA. If you play Neo Geo games with Mame, then most of the games will not work good. FBA for Neo Geo is highly recommended. All games work flawlessly without overclocking or cooling on Raspberry Pi 3.

I've always heard this, but never found it to be the case myself. I currently use AdvanceMAME for Neo Geo games and I haven't run into anything that didn't run very well.

I meant the mame2003 off course. AdvanceMame is different story. Didn't test any Neo Geo game on AdvanceMame. There must be some optimizations done.

Mileage must vary with all this. It's been a little bit of time, but I don't remember ever having a problem with Neo Geo games on lr-mame2003 either. Do you know what the issue are specifically?

@mediamogul Mainly its speed issue, as mame2003 is not well optimized for "newer" titles and Neo Geo emulation. Same thing like the CPS-2, why we need FBA. I didn't test much myself, have to admit here. Maybe its an obsolete statement and it was true for older pi systems?

Ah, good call sir. You may have just nailed it. I've personally never had a problem with Neo Geo games or CPS on any of the available emulation options in RetroPie, so I've been wondering about this for some time.

I made my lists above based on your lists on optimal core for MAME games, but it seems some games are not included. Take this week's ROW: Space Panic (panic.zip), this should be part of the MAME2003 romset, but it's not part of these lists. Why is that? What are the lists based on?

I think this is due to having thousands of games to be tested out. If you have any games that are not on the list and you've personally tried it, you can contribute to the list. :)

i would guess that both mame2003 and fba do neogeo perfectly, but fba supports the full catalog plus hacks (i believe mame2003 doesn't have all the KOF games, for example), so i just use that.
