      i think it should be ok. the FOSS community ditched sourceforge pretty swiftly when they started bundling adware with downloads. as i understand it sourceforge has new ownership now that aren't doing that stuff, but i think the damage is done.

      so yeah, if MS put a foot wrong, projects will move to gitlab or wherever. i think they'll be careful.

          I'm not overly fond of this acquisition...

                So are they going to change the name to GitUpdates?

                  github were in real trouble trouble though. They couldnt find new leadership someone has to take it over.

                  Its basically a repository unless something major changes i wouldn't jump the gun. Gitlab, github, Bitbucket,SourceForge, Kiln, Codeplane, CodePlex, Beanstalk are all alternatives some paid and some free. I think if you really dislike something ms owned you most viable options would be bitbucket or gitlab you would really need to compare them two to see which suits you best. I dont thin ms would pay that all money for github just to chase all the user base away

                    Gitlab is my first choice, I don't care for bitbucket

                      well at least there is alternatives if people feel they have to move. I think a lot of people will move out of principle though. Nothing wrong with that personally ill just wait n see I wouldnt be surprised if they started some kind of subscription schemes down the line for new features. I havent even tried gitlab in all honesty

                        It'll start with "please log in with your MS account" and go on from there. They did not buy it just for the sake of buying.

                          @lilbud Wait, forgot a few.

                          Ruining the site by adding hated "features". Once the site is so ruined by their changes, they'll shut the site down due to lack of use and they'll question why.

                            I view this very differently I dont think the open projects will be effected.

                            Its the private closed ones that where the cash is for github. Imagine all the information ms can get from these private repos for sales and advertising and peek at code ect.

                            The company doesnt have a vey good past with anti competitive behavior it. The commercial end of github is where they will make the cash from. That is how github makes a profit before ms took it over as well it not all free when you go private
