ROMs loads to splash screen, inputs locked out

I'll click to load a ROM, splash will load, no retroarch config pop-up, ROM loads as normal, but all inputs are locked out except for the ESC button which turns the screen black. I must disconnect the power to recover the system.
It seems to happen when my USB utrak trackball is plugged in. The trackball isn't recognized by the retropi. I haven't changed any settings or config files. However, today the splash screen issued happened four consecutive times with different ROMs while the trackball was not plugged in.
Any idea how to get the trackball set up?
I'm running Pi3 with the most recent build of retropie (I believe it is 3.8.1 IIRC) on a micro sd card.
