The new Raspberry Pi 4 is here!!

@mick I didn't know you was going that deep as programming it and was making sure you did not miss the theming options. I don't mind improving the user interface where it is possible.
-
In the end it is quite usual with the start of a new raspberry pi:
the first weeks stocks are sold out very fast, after a couple of weeks you will get ´em at every corner.
Concidering Retropie i have patience anyway, i could imagine that a real stable version of retropie set up on buster could be available in autumn.
What is absolutly ok regarding all the changes and optimizations that have to be done!@shavecat shalom we bokär tow chawer scheli! ani alexander ben david be germania :)

I am a UI/UX designer and to me it feels very old. Also some of the usability could potentially be improved. Overall i am thinking of an all new design and interface. I made a request on GitHub, if you want to join the discussion (this thread might not be the right place): https://github.com/Aloshi/EmulationStation/issues/801
i'm afraid that github is also not the right place - retropie forked the abandoned aloshi repo several years ago - it's hosted here: https://github.com/retropie/EmulationStation. but also, github isn't the place for open-ended discussions, but more for specific bugs, so i would close your issue and create a thread in the forums.
but generally, are you sure what you want to do can't be achieved by themes within emulationstation? the theme engine is quite powerful. we also support several other front ends (attractmode, Pegasus, mehstation) which have their own abilities and themes. i think the chances of someone creating a brand new front end for your specific idea are remote, so i would instead try and see what existing front end could work with your idea, with/without specific changes.

I'm not the most technically savvy person on the planet but I have a question. I have a build I downloaded and added my own ROMs, theme mods etc to for the Pi 3B+. Will that build still function on the Pi 4 once RetroPie has updated? I'm guessing if RetroPie doesn't run, there's no way to update the program from the Pi software. Will I need to download a fresh version of RetroPie once it's released and manually add all the roms from my old build?
Essentially what I'm asking is if all RetroPie builds/images will be obsolete on a Pi4.

There will need to be new builds, the old ones will not work on the 4.

@Barcrest
Yes I was afraid that was the case. Thanks for the reply. :) -
@mick Actually, the forum might be the right place for discussions, since the actual users can chime in - this is how many features have been developed. Open a new topic in the Projects and Ideas category.
Also, the Emulationstation version we're using is from github.com/retropie/Emulationstation, the original project is long dormant. -
@mick You could put your skills into practice by improving Mehstation
-
I dont know if anyone noticed but the pi 4 SDRAM frequency is set to 3200mhz. I knew that it was better than previous models, just didnt realize how much better. I also saw on the RPI config.txt documentation page that by enabling 4k video mode, the GPU's clock speed will auto increase to 600 mhz, so there is definitely some overclocking potential here if 600mhz is considered stable as a factory setting.
Im picking up my 4b 2gb tomorrow and hope to start playing with it this weekend. Fun times!
-
@quicksilver It's insane (in positive sense) that they actually use DDR4. The previous version used DDR2 and I was expecting 3 for cost reasons. Even my current day to day and gaming machine uses DDR3 with 1600mhz.
-
Maybe it is possible by use of the existing theme engine. Does it support 4k, too? Anyway it might lead into a new default theme.

Emulationstation is not limited to a certain resolution, but I think themes are designed with assets and layouts for a 1080p resolution, that's why they might look awkward on 4k. If you want to take a look, you can grab a Windows version from here and a pre-configured portable install from here - which has some systems and scraped info already, along with some fake roms.

Made a new discussion here: https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/22709/all-new-emulation-station-ui
Sorry for off topic :) Super hyped for the Pi4!

I'm quite excited for the Pi4. The CPU, GPU, and memory upgrades will make a huge difference when emulating some of the more recent platforms. I'm going to wait until there is a proper NesPi case or something with equal appeal like a Genesis/MegaDrive case designed for the form factor and layout before I buy though. But yeah I'm legitimately excited for the performance improvements this will offer as it is a HUGE upgrade. I've been holding off doing another build for years now as my RetroPie 3.6 builds do mostly what I want them to, and I've come to terms with what they don't do particularly well (3DO, N64, Dreamcast, PSP) so I've just kind of let it stagnate. I mostly favor the 3rd and 4th console generations anyway. This new Pi4 is the perfect excuse to invest the time to make a fresh build as there will be legitimate and significant gains. I personally don't think Saturn emulation at playable speed is all that realistic but I'd love to be proven wrong. I am however very curious about 3DO emulation on the Pi4. If someone tests this when they get their Pi4 in hand, I'd love to know the result.
-
@drake999 Why don't you think Saturn is possible? It runs fine on the Odroid Xu4. The only reason it didn't get a Pi port was because of the lack of GLS 3.0 support. Now this is here it should come.
-
@Barcrest Well if that is the case I'm even more excited then. I wasn't basing that opinion on anything other than my own knowledge of the system's complexity and how difficult emulation for the platform has been traditionally. If it works at playable speed on the Pi4 that is awesome.
-
@drake999 There is an emulator that runs it pretty well on the odriod. I think it is a fork of YABSE, it may even be linked earlier up in this thred. You can get it for the PC too.

On my overclocked 3 b+ I was able to get Road Rash running at 35-55fps. Menus were fullspeed and load times were fine. I suspect the pi 4 will be able to handle no problem. Pure speculation at this point but if I could get that close on the 3 b+ then its not a huge leap to think the much more powerful pi 4 can handle.
-
@quicksilver Thanks for the info. I've been away from the forum for a while and the last time I was in a discussion involving 3DO testing it was a slideshow in terms of fps. I never bothered to test it myself when I heard the results others were getting. With what you've told me its all but guaranteed to work great on the Pi4, which is awesome news.
-
@Barcrest About my only positive experience with Saturn emulation was a brief test I did on my core i5 gaming laptop and from what I remember it worked quite well. I think it was Mednafen. I never went beyond just testing and playing around with the emulator briefly though as I didn't find the interface very intuitive at the time, and it was a bit of a chore to use I found personally. I've heard Yabause is quirky at best so never even attempted that one. Because it was my understanding that up until recently Saturn emulation was difficult even on a beefed up PC, I never bothered to even entertain the idea on an ARM based platform. I guess I should have been paying more attention.
