So this is odd. I wanted to check something in the controls for a game in lr-mame2016 and went into the Tab menu. When I tried to assign Up to up on the joystick, it registered as "Kbd Up" instead. The joystick is still recognised for scrolling through the menu (except for up, of course), but MAME is now convinced it's the keyboard.

Obviously I could go and fix this manually in the config file, if I had any idea where that was, but I'm completely flummoxed. I can't see anything in the usual places (mainly /opt/retropie/configs.hdmi/all/retroarch/config).

Raspberry Pi 3b and 8GB Raspberry Pi 4, both running Retropie 4.7.1 installed from scratch using Raspberry Pi Imager, with wired keyboard, wireless mouse and double arcade joystick attached.

i must insist you provide the info requested in https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first on every support request.

some joysticks can interface as keyboards - eg ipac setups. does it not still work?

          Isn't that in my sig?

            no.

            double arcade joystick attached

this doesn't mean anything. you need to give the model and type of your controller. eg "Ultimarc I-PAC4"

https://retropie.org.uk/forum/topic/3/read-this-first asks for a lot of granular, specific information such as image file name, verbose log, and so on. a sig is not going to be sufficient.

@dankcushions I haven't got the slightest idea what make or model it is, it's some generic thing I bought from China.

@jimmyfromthebay well, a verbose log would tell us what it is.
