MAME ROW #2: Blue's Journey / Raguy
-
@meleu
Annother idea but it will complicate the process a bit.
Maybe if you still use the old game rules but you make 5 random selected games and then the forum jury (the whole forum of course!) make decision via poll what game is next. I played also Blue journey but well... it isn't the same style as the old classics before.Or like you already mentioned ... use a filter from 1900-1985 ... but well there were lots of awful games developed during the first video crash in 1983 :(

@lilbud said in MAME ROW #2: Blue's Journey / Raguy:
@meleu Should this round include Monday?
Sure! I believe anyone can post anything (hi-score, strategies, etc.) in any previous rounds threads about the respective game! We aren't that rigorous (I think).
It's Columbus Day here in the states, but I am not sure if that exists in other countries.
For curiosity: there's no such day here in Brazil.
It was also my birthday yesterday.
If we were on the same city we would play some Marvel vs. Capcom (or maybe SNES Bomber Man 4 players fighting) in celebration of your day. And if you were completing 21 years we could take a few beers... :-)
For curiosity (2): in Brazil people are allowed to drink when complete 18 years.
-
@meleu I'm still a few years off of drinking yet.
Even in Brazil. -
I liked the @cyperghost first idea, but would like to limit to 3 options. I created a poll about this all, please vote:

@lilbud I looked up Columbus Day and it says that Americas and surprisingly also Italy, Spain and other various Little Italys celebrate this holiday except some U.S. states; Hawaii, Alaska, Oregon, and South Dakota do not recognize Columbus Day at all; however, Hawaii and South Dakota mark the day with an alternative holiday. Also Canada observes their Thanksgiving Day on that day. This is our history lesson of the day :-)
@cyperghost I like the voting idea as well!
-
@backstander Columbus day is in the list of italian celebrative days; but it's not a holiday in Italy (unfortunately!)
-
My score was 65,334
I'd have a screenshot, but in a fit of rage, I reset the emulation, losing my progress.
-
@meleu I recently screwed up. Since I haven't had much time to keep up with how everyone was choosing games (didn't realize it was random), I got it confused with another forum where it's on a 'first post' rule meaning that whoever posts first on a Friday with a game in mind is what the next tournament was to be based on. It's chaotic but usually works as long as it isn't a game we played before.
Some on here didn't like that and thought I was being an asshole or something, but I understand why. I need to pop in here more often.
Going to pop up Blue's Journey. It's been ages since I've played it.
-
Don't worry about it. It's the internet and mistakes happen. Just say a few Hail Marys and post some ridiculous cat meme and I'm sure all will be forgiven.
-
@qix77 no-one said you were an asshole.
i think it's a shame it looks like the 'vote for one of the 3 random games' option is going to be the clear winner. now as soon as anything remotely well-known appears it will be the one voted for, rather than us getting 'forced' to play these curios like blue's journey, which i would have never have fired up otherwise. boo!
and that's why democracy doesn't work :)
-
I don't know, even with a selection of three, the odds are probably still in favor of the curios. I mean out of 4705 games, how many are really well known, several hundred maybe? However, I do get what you're saying and I sympathize. When I participate, I'll always be likely to vote for something I've never played before that looks interesting, as it adds to the overall experience for me.
-
@qix77 you started to call us to play arcade games on the weekends. You're not an asshole. We love you! <3
@dankcushions democracy, at least in this specific case, really works. Because nobody will be forced to play the chosen game, only those who wants to participate. There's no prize/money involved in this "tournament". It's just for fun and to make us interact a little more.
I think the most likely to win on a vote won't be the best known, but which meet the requirements we talked about earlier (repetitive, each stage increase the difficulty, score matters, etc.). Think on a dispute between "Captain Commando" vs "Bosconian". I would vote for Bosconian.
-
I say next week we play Cloud Master, or Chuka Taisen
-
@dankcushions You will get in deep trouble if the next selection contains the three games
- 1942
- 1941
- 1943
You made my day :)
I think it's better to choose between three games because in the case of the MAME ROW #2 I disliked the game. Moreover if there are three games to choose everybody can collect game experience ...
- Show videos in youtube
- read game guides
- by selfplaying
That's the way I would choose a game and give my vote. I think that is fair for all. I understand your concern if there is one real good and popular game in. I think Gyruss would for example outstand every other game. But think about we are talking about 4000+ games and there are only a bunch of well knowen - and such a constallation is more or less an exception.
-
@cyperghost actually it's something like 2500 games when you take out all the clones, which is how our system works. plus you remove all the non-working and gambling/etc games, and you're left with maybe 1500 possibilities.
hey, in 29 years we will have played all the games regardless ;)
anyway, back to blue's journey... or as i like to call it 'shitty super mario bros 2' :)
-
@dankcushions
Hmm... 29 years later! Nice imagination.
Then we can play the oldies, like Splinter Cell, Unreal Tournament, Call of Duty and Halo 5....Blue Journey ... well it was okay, but it's not my personal favour...
-
@dankcushions in 29 years we might be playing something like Call of Duty: Black Ops III on a Raspberry Pi 25!
Also maybe we can for the last weekend of the month, just pick a game purely at random and don't vote. Then the other 3-4 weekends a month we do this voting system.
I played Blue Journey yesterday and I got stuck on the part where you are trying to jump on the fast moving Tetris pieces while trying not to fall into boiling water. I finally got past that but it was getting very frustrating!
I also figured out you can just jump behind that Snowman boss and hit him from behind to easily kill him without getting hit.
-
I watched to an "Amazing World of Gumball" episode with my kid* recently, and Darwin made a song that I would like to dedicate to @qix77
*Having kids is a good excuse to keep watching cartoons... :-)
-
Sorry guys, I had a good go at Blue's Journey but for me it's one of these ones that doesn't lend itself well to emulation - because it's just too easy to keep jabbing the insert coin button and batter through the difficult parts.
I got to the boss that throws those jelly beam things and flames at you, and then unfortunately it crashed on me. I think the score as about 55,000 or thereabouts.
Didn't get a screen shot I'm afraid and don't have the stamina to go through it all again!
Hey, but that's the thing with checking out unfamiliar games, you gotta take the rough with the smooth!
An interesting one, but not one I'll be rushing to return to!
-
I don't know if I can bring myself to play through it again anytime soon but here's my high score of 169310!
